Updating maps from Europe to NZ

Featured Replies

We're considering exporting our 2012 Superb Elegance from the UK to New Zealand. I've enquired about loading NZ maps into the system and have been told it's impossible. I've been quoted over $3000 to install a Zenec system with NZ navigation. Both those answers seem outrageous to me but I'm no expert.

Does the wisdom of the Skoda community have any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Cheers,

Cutter

What kind of a head unit do you have, for starters? Amundsen, Amundsen+, Columbus?

Usually it's the dealership being lazy, calling the impossible card if the work is outside of their standard experiences. Nearly all people working at dealerships aren't car people, most have zero interest in challenges outside of their usual workday and only bother with the bare minimum to get by.

If it's the Columbus, you simply need the latest RNS510 Australia / NZ maps disc and install it over the existing maps (rewrite them).

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it's a Columbus.

Thanks Rustynuts. I had expected/hoped it would be that simple but the replies I received from Skoda weren't helpful at all. They actually referred me to a third party provider who gave the Zenec quote.

Do you know where I would find the RNS510 Australia / NZ maps disc?

Thanks Rustynuts. I was wondering whether you stocked or could source them.

From my helpful Skoda technical man in New Zealand:

Even if the Data is loaded I don’t know if this will work but if you wish it can be tried.

The Unit will still have a “Nav region” set in its Programming, If the Data loaded is not within its region then it will not read it.

This is a security measure built into the unit.

What do you think about that?

I asked:

Is there a way of re-setting the Nav region? Alternatively, could I buy a NZ Columbus system to replace mine?

Skoda reply:

Yes It may be possible but not sure if it is by us, and is a manual process that could be reset if other updates happen.
Generally our Genuine workshop testers restricts us from this access, but aftermarket companies like ACAP have tools/programs that don’t restrict this.
It may be possible for me to do as a one of but I wouldn’t know until I tried.

It’s not so much just buying the New Zealand version,
As mentioned it is in the programming, so when the unit is installed and the tester releases its security function, it communicates with the SKODA server and releases its programming that applies to the Market the car is from.

The unit used in Australia / NZ is the same unit used here, no difference to the hardware at all, and the software is relevant to the hardware. The unit doesn't know when it's in Australia, other than it reads gps data which tells it where it is for mapping purposes and it shows that mapping accordingly. The only function which might be affected would be dvd playback. If you buy dvds over there they'll probably be a different region to the ones your unit is set for here (Europe uses region 2, Aus / NZ use region 4). This can be changed with little problem if someone has the correct software & tool.

Mate you are a legend. Thank you. Astonishing Skoda reps don't know this stuff.

I've used maps from a different region successfully when I went to eastern Europe in my MkII Superb and they worked fine.  Western Europe covered me as far as Poland, but I needed the east DVD for Lithuania, so when I used the navigation it read from the DVD and didn't download as I didn't want to lose my western Europe maps.  It gives you the option when you insert the DVD.

The only thing that didn't work was the TV tuner as they use a different system out there.  I'm not very technical and one of the Briskoda members from the Baltic States kindly explained in another topic somewhere, but I can't remember anything about it now.

The digital tuner in your car most likely only supports the MPEG-2 data compression standard. When countries started switching to digital TV broadcasting, MPEG-2 was the standard. The Baltics adopted digital TV later and went straight to the newer MPEG-4 AVC standard.

The UK uses MPEG-2 for SD and MPEG-4 AVC for HD transmissions.

I'm sorry I can't help (have Bolero) but I'd like to say a premature "Welcome" to New Zealand. You'll love it here.
