skoda 1.2 classic wheel upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi

Bought my lad who is a new driver an 06 plate 1,2 with 56000 miles

My question to all out there is will vrs wheels fit, i know they have the same PCD but i am not sure if the standard wheel nuts will be long enough.

Also theres a stainless exhaust on fleabay but its off a 1.4, will that fit aswell?

VRS wheels will fit just fine with standard wheel bolts, as for the exhaust, probably not without some modifications.

I'm you already know this, but just in case, modifications and new driver insurance don't normally go hand in hand, as always don't give the insurance company ANY reason or excuse to invalidate your insurance..........

No the complete exhaust wont fit but the backbox might

When I had my 1.2 i looked into VRS wheels but they were expensive and so were tyres. Also I think they look a bit silly on a non vrs as they dont suit the rest of the car. I bought some Skoda 15" alloys off a sport model and they looked like a nice oem upgrade. Tyres were cheap i paid £100 for 2 fully fitted Avons vs the VRS 16" which are more like £150.

The fuel economy may be reduced on larger wheels on a 1.2 as well although i cannot confirm this.

Then theres the fact the 16" wheels use 205 tyres which might be too wide to comfortably overcome aquaplaning as the 1.2 lump weighs nothing and so Id be concerned the car might feel unstable through puddles and standing water. Going from standard 175 tyres to 205s would be a massive jump

Got the wheels from ebay with excellent tyres, two had 205s and two 195s so the narrower tyres will go on the front

Thanks for replies gentlemen

Is this a wind-up?  I can't believe you have actually fitted different sized tyres to front and rear.  I suspect any insurance company will refuse to insure it.

Dude, you can't do that, the ABS will scream blue murder about the different sized tyres, it won't work.

What make tyres are they? I had budgets on the back of my old 1.2 fabia and it would always want to lift off oversteer in the wet. Roundabouts could be controlled with some practice but faster country lanes with puddles would make it step out and make for quite a scary experience especially if you have to brake for some reason. Those were 195 tyres with 5mm tread on them and I think they were possibly just too wide for the light and wallowy car. The front tyres were premium ones and with the extra weight up front I never noticed any aquaplaning and never got them to properly understeer even if I really tried hard.

If I were you I would put the wider tyres on the front and the narrower ones on the rear until you can fit all the same size. Although tbh the quality of the tyre is more important than the size in terms of safety and performance imo.

Guess I got lucky then I got a used set of black savio's from the new monte carlo with 215/40-17 Conti's with 8mm thread left for 400 euro here via 2ndhand belgium.
