5000 mile / 4 month report

Featured Replies

I could almost copy and paste my 1000 mile / 1 month report back in April.

I still think it’s a good-looking car and like our choice of colour. I think the Quartz Grey looks great when clean and generally hides the dirt very well. IMO this colour gives the car a classy timeless look.

I also like the cabin. All the controls, switch gear and materials feel good. Instruments are clear and nicely laid out (although my preferred seat/steering wheel position does obscure the top of the speedo and rev counter slightly). There is some mechanical and road noise but it’s suppressed very well and is never overly intrusive.

IMO the engine and gearbox work very well together. The DSG box is smooth and 95% of the time the gear changes are almost imperceptible, touch wood it doesn’t suffer any of the hesitancy and jerkiness at junctions that this box is noted for.

Overall I think it’s a comfortable*, relaxed, easy car to drive and it suits my driving style very well.

* During the first couple of months ownership I mentioned that I found the drivers seat to be quite uncomfortable, after 15 – 20mins it would feel like something quite hard was pushing into my lower back. Quite a few people reassured me that the seats did tend to be quite hard at first but would soften up. I wear a suit to work and tend to use a fairly slim belt, about 2.5cm wide. It sounds ridiculous but I found that removing the belt cured the discomfort.!

Based on tank-to-tank fills I’m getting a very consistent 50mpg (+/- 0.5mpg) and it’s easy get this into mid/late 50’s on a run. I find the on-board computer is 2 – 3mpg optimistic.

So far it’s not used any oil (hope I’ve not jinxed it by saying that… fingers crossed).

I’ve not played with the DCC at all, I’ve just left it in ‘normal’.

I’ve had the box in ‘S’ twice (once accidently) but soon flicked it back into ‘D’.

And I’ve only used the box in ‘manual mode’ once. Have to say, it was very smooth and I thought it worked well but I prefer to just leave it in ‘auto’…. which is why I got the DSG, ha ha.

I sound like a right boring old sod…………… :)

I think the Auto-Hold function works well although I tend to turn it off whilst manoeuvring, parking for example. Just a shame it applies the brake lights.

The Velcro retainers in the boot are great (especially with it being such a large boot) and I use them a lot. Such a simple yet brilliant idea.

I don’t like the stop/start function and turn it off as soon as I start the car. Personally, I don’t think it works well with the DSG box.

I find it slightly awkward to use the ‘Phonebox’ and I’m not sure it provides any real benefit? Being an Auto the lever is usually in P when trying to put the phone in / take the phone out and it’s in the way, it just makes it a bit fiddly….

It says a lot about the car that after 4 months ownership these are my only niggles. The stop/start issue is simply resolved by the press of a button and I don’t tend to use the Phonebox now unless I’m doing a longer journey than my commute.

Given my budget I really don’t think there is a car that would have suited me better. And if I had a bigger budget? I think I’d still be looking at a Superb, but perhaps a higher spec or with more options…. :)

You might like this use for 'S': next time you're coasting downhill and would like a bit of engine braking, flick the lever back to 'S'. When you've scrubbed off enough speed, flick it back to 'D'. Simples. Might add a day to your brake pad life. :)

Hi @freelunch in truth I've never found this to be a problem in my car. During my regular commute there are a couple of hills where the box typically drops down to 4th, this keeps the speed in check and doesn't cause any 'over revving'. I'll keep your tip in mind though, might come in useful on steeper/longer down hill runs.... :)
