petrolbloke‘s ... mk1 Octavia VRS ownership blog

Featured Replies

I thought about starting a project thread before but never got round to it. That and I'm not really into spending lots of money on mods (especially on a daily driver). It'll be more of an ownership blog but hopefully some of you will still find it worth reading. I've now had my car about 6 years and am quite attached to it! Ownership has mostly been trouble free with mostly just age/mileage related things that have needed sorting.

So, on to the start of the story:

I bought it in July 2011 from a local-ish dealer. I bought it to replace a Golf mk4 TDI. I'd bought the Golf not much earlier as a sensible car I could commute in, but I just found it too boring. The Golf was the sensible replacement for my old Integra Type R, which I sold as I didn't want to ruin it commuting in it every day.

I paid £2450 for it (I think!) with a 12 month MOT and 6 months tax. It was 9 years old with 72,900 miles on the clock at the time. The car had only had one owner from new - a husband and wife from Ipswich. Judging by the hole in the driver's floor mat the wife had probably been the main driver (either that or the husband liked cross dressing).

Here's an early photo:

Shortly after getting it I treated it to a service, new breather hoses (Creation Motorsport on eBay) to replace the perished ones and new brakes all round. Then I tested it out on a camping trip to the New Forest with my brother, his g/f and the boot full of camping gear.

More to come next time I get bored!

Ah, the MK1 Octavia..... I miss mine and it's always nice to see a good example being used daily.  Six years of ownership and you've resisted making any major changes  - I'm impressed.

I'd almost forgotten about this thread...!

A few other bits I had done in 2011:

  • New brake servo hose. The old one had split, causing a lack of servo-assistance to the brakes.
  • 4x New coil packs fitted by Skoda (free!)
  • Powerflex diesel dogbone mount. Gearchange was awful before with the old, worn out mount. It's still fitted now.

On to 2012:

  • Brake fluid & fuel filter change
  • Wheel alignment check and adjustment
  • Cruise control retro-fitted.
  • New MAF (exchange at Skoda dealer)
  • Sourced some second hand mats and binned the one with the aforementioned hole.
  • 4x new tyres (Hankook Ventus Prime 2 and S1 Evo 205/50/R17)
  • Oil pick-up pipe replaced as a precaution.
  • Took it to Le Mans
  • Routine servicing

Eventually I'll catch this thread/log up to 2019! :)

LMAO Tom, look forward to you bringing the thread up to date.

We're like car twins!

Mine was bought a bit later than yours but at a similar mileage.

The first things things I did were new breathers and coils and I'm considering having cruise retro fitted too.

Mines a daily driver and has been on many half decent distance trips with surprisingly good mpg at @70 mph.

I love it.
