Petrol or Diesel? What to Choose

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Just back from a family holiday in Pembrokeshire, while I was away, the boys were chatting about cars. I have the 1.8TSi Superb estate DSG which I bought in December 2015 with 24,000 miles on the clock (it was registered new on 30th September 2011). Overall it's a great car and can't be beaten for space. However I have a daily commute of 50 miles each way and it now has 62,500 on it.

I'm starting to think about a replacement and I fancy the L&K version. The annual mileage of 22k per year means a PCP deal looks more like a mortgage than a car payment, so I'm looking at a newer MkII Superb Estate. However all I can find are the diesel engine versions.

So, my question is, with all that's going on with diesel am I better off keeping the TSi until more MkIII Petrols are available or should I consider diesel?

Looking forward to your input.

Thanks - Rob

With that sort of mileage and each day commute diesel is far more economical.

As above at your milage diesel ' ought ' to work out cheaper, later dpf installations seem far more reliable than when first fitted, car and/or fuel ' additional ' taxation is open to speculation ( I work for a small company we have 6 diesel vans our business is already cut throat without the powers to be adding extra ' duties ' to fuel etc adding to overhead expenses I can't see any government gambling on loss of votes from further taxation hitting the pocket of the working public who ' have ' to use their vehicles )

however the previously over inflated price of diesel vehicles should now rapidly fall away

( don't hold your breath though )

Why change at all? Given it sounds as though you own the current car outright and would have to purchase the replacement outright, if there's nothing wrong with the car then maybe keep it at least for another year, perhaps two and see what's available then?

Might be some better options for you then (I suspect if I drove a hybrid to work the last few miles which can take 20+ minutes the combustion engine wouldn't be running at all) and the money you're not spending on a replacement buy plenty of fuel...

One thing to be aware of is the 70k mark if you're thinking of PX. I suspect with a car like that you'd do much better on a private sale to someone who is specifically looking for a petrol version of the Superb Estate. As you've found, it's a relatively small percentage of them!

Cheers,

Steve

I can understand why you want the L&K - I wish I could afford one!  However, I think switching to diesel right now is a bad move - despite the apocalyptic publicity, dealers will STILL charge you top dollar but in 3 years' time no-one will want to buy it off you.  If you're prepared to keep it and grit your teeth through the tax and fuel rises, then maybe... What about a V6?

The main thing which would put me off a Diesel engine is if I were doing short trips and maybe low overall mileage (because I prefer petrol engines and the savings on diesel would be minimal for low mileage), you don't suffer either of these, hopefully the current (synthetic) unpopularity of Diesel engines won't start putting fuel costs up in the short term and with the mileage you do you may be onto your next car by then.  Play hardball on the purchase price due to possible risk and you should be OK

Thank you for taking the time to reply guys and there are some great insights coming from you.

I've just spent £249 on a service and having the telephone module programmed and them another £306 on having the Can Bus Interface Module replaced, so keeping it should probably be the best option.

However I had a drive of an L&K with the Panoramic Sunroof and I really, really want a sunroof!

That's the problem with cars (and bikes), there's always something else to want.  I've come to really like mine and now wish I'd spent a bit more (maybe newer, maybe an estate, maybe and L&K, or a 4x4 version) but then I keep telling myself I bought the car to try and save some money as I've not been keeping cars long enough to get the best value from them.  So I'm have to keep my feet planted and remain with this car until I've put some reasonable miles on it.

If you get rid I'd advise keeping the parts you've replaced, who knows you may need them again!

I really wanted a sunroof too, but after reading about the drains blocking and the roof leaking I am kind of glad I didn't.

I know what you mean, however I've got 62K on it and putting on between 500 - 900 miles per week depending on what we do at the weekends!

Got to admit it is running beautifully at the moment and as the traffic is a bit lighter I got 40.9 mpg on the computer last night on my drive home from Bolton!

I anticipated regretting mine but despite it having leaked once and leaving a faint stain on the headlining I still love it.

I have never had a blocked drain and suspect you would have to leave it parked near a leaf shedding tree  with the roof open to suffer this?

I use it more closed than open (blind open - glass closed) and love having the extra light.

Driving with it open does introduce an occasional rattle (on uneven roads #) from the support arms which is annoying.

(on uneven roads #) = any road in Gloucestershire that is not a motorway or link road thereto .

diesel would be my choice , by the time the government gets around to "banning them ", we'll be dead and gone

a sunroof was all the rage in the 80's , not many cars  have them now, they are a nuisance , always leaking and make a noise when they are open. The last car I had with one was a vauxhall carlton , had to use silicon mastic and gaffer tape around the edges towards the end, I used to get envious looks from women when they saw the gaffer tape

I've had a look at an L&K - there is potentially a 2011 TSi Elegance Estate available see my other thread called "Toe In The Water"

Went to look at the L&K and I think the dealer and I have different definitions of immaculate!!!!

Yeah - they need a dictionary for "immaculate", "pristine" and "showroom".

I especially love their habit of adding the phrases "...for its age" or "...considering they had 6 kids, 3 dogs and kept 4 horny ferrets in it..." .........  after you have driven an hour and a half to check the car out.

I know what you mean, it was only 45 minutes do not too bad.

It was the chip in the windscreen, hole in the indicator repeater in the passenger door mirror and one brand new Kumho tyre on the front nearside complimenting the fairly worn Continentals on the rest.

You just didn't get the feeling it had been particularly loved by its previous owner.
