Dogbone insert installed: wow!

Featured Replies

Just a quick review/endorsement of this mod.

My car felt particularly vague and when driving fast the shifting was horrible, specially when shifting near the redline (it is a manual, BTW...)

I ordered a metal insert due to some reports that the poli ones tend to melt with the mount after a while and therefore are a bitch to remove.

A friend of mine has a garage with a lift and impact gun so, I borrowed them and install took me 10 minutes from start to end, with the biggest share of the time being preparing the car to be lifted - the actual install took literally less than one minute.

But the drive... Oh, my god... What a difference!

In all the time I have owned the car it never drove this good.

There is a minimal increase in vibration but you only notice it if you are really looking for it or on higher revs. Once again, I underline 'minimal'

The shifting is perfect, when accelerating or braking the response is immediate, shifting while cornering at speed is way more precise, throwing the car into a corner it feels more precise - most of the vagueness is gone and I can only imagine that doing the roll bars will improve on this.

It is a cheap and easy to do mod that I consider essential for manual cars and that is very easy to also undo in case you don't like it.

I went for a short drive yesterday but I plan to drive some more today and then I will report further.

Oh, almost forgot: it gets rid of the notorious 'wheel-hop'

I give it a 9/10, not getting a 10 only due to the mentioned (minor) increase in vibration.

So, 10 days in, here's my verdict.    The good definitely outweighs what's left of the bad. Well worth the purchase!    All the bad points have either gone completely, once the bus

Great news, thank you. What insert did you go for? There have been reports about vibration-noise-harshness when idle, reversing or when the A/C is on.

Could you please comment on those? I am contemplating getting such an insert but given that I do mostly city driving I'm worried this might ruin my traffic jam experience :)

I will go for a bigger drive in a couple of hours, but on my first impressions from yesterday, it is totally acceptable.

The noise when launching the car does increase a bit, but it is nothing outstanding, although subject to opinion.

It is a matter of priorities: if comfort is your priority, then maybe you should not do this mod. On the other hand, if you are willing to sacrifice a little bit of comfort to get better shifting, then do it.

For me, the imprecise shifting was completely spoiling the drive and this got rid of it, so... It is subjective.

As to which one I went with, to be honest, I don't even know...

I looked all over and this one came from eBay from a Canadian seller and it was unbranded - there was a brand logo on the actual part but I don't remember what it is.

I can share the link when I get near a PC.

Word of warning!

There are 2 different mount types, that supposedly change by year but not necessarily so... You need to visually inspect what mount you have before ordering and choose the correct insert for your mount type - mine is type 2

Oh, and in idle there was 0 difference - that I can say already.

No extra noise or vibration on idle.

Also, when manoeuvering (back and forth) I did not feel any more noise.

How to describe this... Have you ever driven cars with big engines?

I previously had a Saab with a 2.8V6 engine and the vibration with this mount installed feels similar.

You just feel the engine more, but I don't think that is a bad thing.

I took a Audi A6 MY13 with a 3.0TDI engine for a spin yesterday and the vibration when putting the foot down was not much different from the Octavia with the insert.

Hope this helps, cause it is really hard to describe accurately.

This is the actual one I ordered, but there are other similar options - there is a huge variety, with them coming in rubber, poly and aluminium.

I researched that the rubber/poly have a tendency to melt with with the mount so I went with aluminium.

Once again MAKE SURE TO CONFIRM THE MOUNT TYPE ON YOUR CAR

Update:

Just drove the car and it is even smoother than yesterday - if you did not know the insert was there you would not notice.

I checked in particular the idle - absolutely no different from normal, meaning zero vibrations or sound.

Same goes for AC and reverse.

Might be that different types and models of inserts affect differently and some cause those effects.

At least for me, I got none of those.

Of course, if you launch the car full power from a standstill and redline the changes, you feel note noise and slight more vibration, but honestly, doesn't feel disturbing at all.

I am really glad to hear this. I have been thinking about this for some time now but neggative reviews (on different VAG cars) had put me off. However wheel hop is ruining the experience so now you have persuaded me to go ahead and buy one. I will check whether its a type 1 or 2 and give it a try. Thank you very much. Enjoy yours!

Just researching this topic now. I wondered if anyone has experience of the Ali ones bending. I've seen a few pics on other forums  showing the ali ones bent.

Have any long term users of this or a similar mod got any usefull info.

I really want to get the wheel hop minimised before I get the remap. Thanks

Have actually considered it :)

...that and the top engine mount too.

But at this moment, I am undecided about how long I will keep this car, so might be I won't throw much more money at it.

Seen some silly prices for those sets.

Just the red insert bit is £120.

The search for the right bit at a sensible price continues

If you looking for something more elaborate, I think Revo also does the same type of insert?

Having scouted around seems like Powerflex has the best deal at around £55.

Looking on an Audi forum they were all favouring the red one meant for diesels as it was slightly softer and had less vibration then the yellow one  for their daily drivers. So im still lacking the definitive answers.

I'm probably going for the yellow hybrid one that replaces the whole original rubber I think and hoping its not too stiff and it beds in and softens to an acceptable standard.

Can't seem to find any reviews of it but it is a specialist obscure thing I guess.

Now I need to get under there and work out what one I have now so I can get the right bit.

The thing with those non-metalic ones is that they melt together with the original mount - and sometimes even break...

Oh bother I've just ordered one of the non metallic ones you add on to the original.

I was thinking it would be a simple reversal if it wasn't all that. I'll have to see how it goes  it wasn't hugely expensive at £35 so if it's a mistake I won't be to badly out of pocket.

I've similarly had a look at the Powerflex ones in particular, and was advised by the 2 garages I use that they seem decent.

And then...

... I've also heard this elsewhere, and now I don't know what to believe.

EVERYTHING'S A LIE!?!

But seriously, it would be good to get an overall Brisky / VAG consensus what the best brand and type for daily (sporty) driving is - both in terms of longevity and driveability.

Well I'll report back.

Thing is I'm getting new tyres as well so it may be a combined effect.

If we get some good weather in the time in between the tyre fitting and the  mount turning up I'll  try to reproduce the wheel hops. Any excuse for a bit of hooning about

Regardless of tires, the difference is immediately noticeable.

For me, at least, it 100% got rid of wheel hop under any circumstances.

The grip and tires will let go if you just push it hard, but without hoping of any sorts.

Yep - that's primarily what I'm looking to reduce. Especially when kicking down circa 300 bhp ;)

Let me know how this goes @Ads230 & I'll share my thoughts of the "increase traction VCDS" mod later in the month when I get it.

I bought the 034motorsport one and i'll report back on the fitment and if theres any rattle, i expect more rattle as its a diesel but its noisy enough with the crappy tyres i have. I would love to fit the replacement dogbone arm and mount but was advise against if its diesel as it makes it way too noisy at idle.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok just fitted the powerflex yellow add in torque mount this morning.

Goes in fairly easy but a bit stiff for the last 20mm.

I ended up easing it in with the aid of the car jack and a block of wood. Its a 21mm socket not 22 as some guides have said. Had to pack out the socket with paper so I could push the bolt up and then get a turn on it to get it started. the insert was just holding everything apart.

First impressions are it's a bit throbby at idle, a deep rumbley throbby note that is very pronounced  at idle and in reverse. I am hoping it calms down a bit as it wears in after a bit of use.

I went for the yellow one but there is a red one that's supposed to be a bit softer. I suppose I can always change it if it doesn't calm down soon.

Performance wise  I haven't  had much of a chance to fully test it. But so far no irritating axle tramp bangs as yet. So it's got a thumbs up from me and it does feel more sporty and powerful, the engine sounds a bit louder because of it.
