Where ever they are manufactured they will be 'British', like many other 'British' products even Iconic British Products.

I expect Dyson is the dilemma that many company owners whose nationality is British is what the UK trade deal is going to be with various countries and the markets for these cars.  Some Southeastern Asian countries have deals with the EU and other countries and some do not and may never get deals and may even be subject to Anti-Dumping duties.   EU's external tariff duty rate is 10% for countries without a preference agreement, the UK may mirror the EU external tariff or do its own thing, within WTO rules.

We have our electric cars built in Italy and they have access to the who EU without any duties.   Import duties on a Tesla are quite a tidy sum of money, adding to the UK retail cost, which is a shame when the UK has the objective to clean up the air quality.

I did 450 miles yesterday and the only EV a Tesla could have done that journey even though I had a 3 hour stop over at Guildford University (not that well off for charging in the area sadly), a quick charge 41 kW-hr Zoe would have been touch and go doing the journey.    Spread of the EU charging network.  I seem to be finding more and more petrol pumps out of action for some reason

The UK will be in a position to make what ever Trade Tariff deals they want for Electric Vehicle Imports and the components for them.

There will no doubt be Countries and their EV Manufacturers and Component makers that will be pleased to negotiate that.

Time will tell how much the EU club will stick together and 'Deal or no deal' with the UK if they can get away with deals.

Hungary a member of the EU but not in the Euro Zone have the gear and an idea and the labour force and facilities in place for manufacturing the Motors and other components. After all VW Group and others intend having manufacturing done there and already do.

Japanese and South Korean Manufacturers as well.

'Dyson to build electric car in Singapore'.

http://bbc.co.uk/news/business-45950377

So much then for the UK leading the World in Electric Vehicles and Green Technology.

Probably makes economic sense - develop here but build where the labour rate is low.

Also the article notes "The company currently has 1,100 employees in Singapore, 1,300 in Malaysia, 1,000 in China and 800 in the Philippines. " - so it has a large contingent of staff in that part of the world already

and, "Dyson insisted the decision to locate production in Asia, rather than the UK, had nothing to do with Brexit."

& the BBC news report says it could be cheaper to Import them to the EU than to the UK,

but we will see when the UK knows what tariffs will apply.

Dyson probably subcontacts production as do most major tech companies. They wont own or run the Asian factories. Often referred to as "joint ventures", they have no responsibility for employees.

I am at a loss to why there are not already EV's estate being offered.

Then Estate Car based Vans / commercials. Fast response Police Dog Handler Transport..Paramedics etc. Hearses even.

The shape of a Honda Civic Tourer seemed just right to me for being a EV.

British billionaire James Dyson is reportedly buying a luxury Singapore mansion - marketed for an eye-watering £26million - just weeks after the inventor snapped up the city-state's most expensive penthouse.

The freehold property, which sprawls over 15,000 square feet of tropical land, boasts a waterfall, an infinity pool and a landscaped garden.

In order for a foreigner to win government approval to purchase the home, they must have made 'exceptional economic contributions in Singapore,' according to the Straits Times.

Earlier this month, Dyson, 74, grabbed headlines when he bought a 21,000-square-foot 'super penthouse' for a reported £43million.

Dyson Ltd, famous for its flagship vacuum products, plans to manufacture electric cars in the city-state as part of its eastward expansion to tap into Asian markets.

But the vehement Leaver sparked fury and was branded a hypocrite after relocating his company in a move perceived as deliberately insulating the business from post-Brexit uncertainty.

Dyson insisted that the decision was not taking in light of the 2016 Leave vote and such suggestions were 'missing the point'.

He said: 'Singapore has a comparatively high cost base, it also has great technology expertise meaning it is the right place to make a high quality, technology loaded, electric vehicle.'

cleared the rubbish off

I hope the Dyson EV is better than the Dyson air blade tap.

Had my first experience of these today at a garden centre and was not remotely impressed.

DYSON can not be accused of using the media to keep hyping the new EV constantly while there is nothing new to say on the matter.

  • 3 weeks later...

Dyson have now canned the project.

Mustbe down to his beloved Brexit.

Sorry for the employees, After the over ambitious owner.

Stick to vacuum cleaners and know your design limits.

I doubt its to do with brexit. Its probably more to do with the fact that they have no knowledge of the car market and with everyone now jumping on the EV bandwagon the chance of them making a mainstream product is slim to none. Why carry on throwing loads of money at a project that is unlikely to sell in large enough volumes to justify the money spent. Look at Airbus with the A380!

If the Dyson EV would have had the same price premium as Dyson cleaners do then nobody with any sense would have bought one instead of a Tesla - so they priced themselves out of the market IMHO.
