I need a leather steering wheel!

Featured Replies

I find my PU wheel on my old elegance really hard to grip. What's the go on either getting it covered in leather or finding one to retrofit?

Thanks!

I had the same issue way back in 2005, and managed to find a grain leather wheel glove in Halfords that fitted "well enough" to give me the grip I wanted, although it left a gap in the inside of the wheel rim.

I fitted this

The Wheel was from a VW Bora and the airbag from a Superb

OK, but I haven't got cruise. Did the L&K one have leather?

Looks like there are tons of 3 spoke wheels that would a Seat, Skoda or VW. All I need to do is change the badge.

Yes mine did have a leather as standard, I only replaced it as I wanted the cruise control on the wheel rather than the stalk, I did try to swap the badge but it didn't want to budge and I didn't want to risk damaging the airbag that's why I got the superb airbag

Thanks again. I'm actually leaning towards that 3 spoker. At least it should be plug and play, shouldn't it?

Could look for one from a VRs they are 3 spoke with the correct badge and will be PnP

That's the one.

Mine has one, too.

Might just be mine, but the leather is pretty smooth and hard, rather than being what I'd consider especially grippy, though.

OK, do you think a good cleaning would bring it back to a more grippy state?

Thanks all, I bought the eBay one. There are some good vids on bringing back leather wheels from a shiny state to a new finish. But, it seems you should NOT use magic erasers, even though the visual cleaning ability seems to be fantastic.

Didn't on mine. It just made the leather feel nice and conditioned.

It's not really a problem for me, but it's definitely doesn't feel as cushioned and grippy as, say, a brand new soft leather wheel cover.

Yeah, mine got delivered yesterday. It's in really good condition, but shiny. I took the airbag out and gave it a really good clean and condition. I used the Gliptone products, and it came up pretty well. Still shiny-ish, but better, and deffo more grippy than my standard wheel. I might try the 'hot towel' trick on it in due course one day. Apparently it brings out the hand oils.

I got a n italian leather cover from Ebay that you then stitched in place oneself to suit the spokes. Aboyt 15quid if i remember rightly and it took about 15-20 to fit and stitch in.

Pretty sure i did a thread on it, though photos were photobucket so now gone id reckon

Edit.. found it, photos dead..

Many thanks mac! Looks good!

Yeah, it did...

I hope the new owner still has it in place and appreciates the italian leather :D
