Last weekend with the Superb

Featured Replies

This is my last weekend with my 2013 Superb Elegance Estate. It’s my company car and I’d wanted a Skoda Superb for many years so when our company financial director at last agreed I could have one it was ordered that same day. It really has been ‘Superb’, and has only let me down once when the water pump went at about 70k miles, it also suffered from sawtooth tyre wear on the rear on one occasion but this seems fairly common on VW group vehicles and was sorted with a wheel alignment at the next service and it has been fine ever since. I will miss the size of the boot, but I really don’t need to carry as much around with me as I do (work related gear), and very rarely do I have any passengers in the rear so I won’t miss the rear seat space either. It’s been used for running around the UK for my work and I’ve often smiled when I see another one going the other way, which is quite often.

It has just had its second M.O.T. done and the only advisory was both front and rear brake pads are wearing thin – hardly surprising as they are still on the original ones from new and it now has nearly 122k on the clock.

On Monday I pick up my new car, and already I’m feeling quite sad about handing the keys back and walking away from it, I’ve treated it as my own car so it’s been well looked after and I hope whoever has it next treats it the same way. On Sunday I plan on giving it a final wash, polish and vacuum. I no longer get the new car excitement as I’ve had many new cars over the years and right now only 30% of me wants the new car, 70% of me wants to keep the Superb, that may seem strange to some people but that’s how much I like the Superb.

The company I work for purchase their vehicles rather than lease them and they were offered a cracking deal on certain new VW group cars, so from the list I’ve chosen a new 2018MY Tiguan 2.0TDI SEL DSG in Caribbean Blue with rear camera and park assist which was offered with just over 8k off the list price. A bit different but I hope I get on well with it, time will tell.

The Superb is indeed one of the last 'relatively' simple Skoda cars, the MkIII, Octavia, Kodiaq etc. are all nice cars but alas overly complicated.

My 2011 Superb has just hit 130,000 miles and I too will be sad to see it go, whenever that might be.

The new VW Tiguan looks a smart car, I've seen a few around now, a marked improvement visually over its predecessor.

Caribbean Blue is also a good choice...

Kind of agree despite my issues. Really is a nice car especially with the extra gadgets over and above Elegance spec. Hopefully the new ride will give you just as much pleasure.

It has served you well and its hard to find anything as good as a Superb however the Tiguan is a great car and love that colour!

You should have tried to buy it off the company

It would be of no use to me at home unfortunately, plus it's a manual and due to the wife needing two knee replacements she can only drive automatics at the moment, plus she finds it much easier to get in a higher up vehicle - much less pressure on the knee joints.

Hope the Merc is going well for you.

My Superb Greenline has been so great I have decided to run in for at least another year. At 105k, like yours it has been faultless and also like yours is still on the original discs and pads all round and it still averages 66mpg. Next week it goes for its cam belt and pump and I am looking forward to at least another 30k in it.  I can afford to replace it with something much better, but I come from the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school of motoring, so I will run it a bit longer as it gives me no grief whatsoever.

It is by far the best of the 20 plus cars I have owned in my 1.3 million mile driving career.  B)
