Removing grille on top of dashboard

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how to remove the grille in the top centre of the dashboard?

I've had a rattle from behind there since new, left it too long to tell dealer (over 6 months/6k miles apparently for rattles and squeaks to be done under warranty) as I wanted it done at same as first service due to dealer being an hour away...and now they want £90 just to look, even though they thought they had sorted it at 1st svc., having charged for it. Lost the will to live with asking the dealer now and would like to have a go myself.

I don't want to break anything, anyone removed this before? I don't have Canton sound, is it only Canton that has a speaker there? That's what the dealer claimed anyway...

I have checked under the scuttle panel to see if anything was loose there, checked the sound generator (disabled via VCDS anyway) but can't find anything obvious. It's only at certain revs too, most annoying.

I have the same problem. It rattles especially bad when listening to Wil Wheaton's audiobooks (Ready Player one)

Have you found a solution to this?

Not yet, removed grille but didn't find anything.

Went on Erwin, there's a related TPI that suggests it could be the sound generator touching it's bracket, and to adjust it; I have mine turned off with VCDS but have yet to remove tje scuttle panel under the wipers and check it out.

I have found that closing both centre air vents seems to make it better?

Someone else has posted that theirs was fixed by the dealer, and it was the driver's side knee airbag?!

I'm pretty certain it's the centre speaker grille for my rattle. When it happens, I can put my hand on it and no more noise.

May I ask how did you remove the grille? I'd like to give this a try.

Trim removal tool (cheap as chips on eBay).

Very tight fit and you will likely break a clip or two - replacement grille isn't expensive. Be careful not to scratch/mark the surrounding dash surface.

Handy topic revival... I've been getting some strange distortion on my canton speaker recently and was wondering how to remove the grille. The gap is almost non-existent between the grille and the dash!

I started at the front of the grille with an old credit card, then levered the trim removal tool down between it and the grille, thereby protecting the dash. I wasn't bothered if I broke the grille as I had bought a spare one ready!

It needs a reasonable amount of force to free the first clip, then I worked around the edges until it finally came free.

Thanks, the grille is only about £12 so cheap enough if I break it. More worried about marking or damaging the dash which isn't so easy or cheap to fix! :D

If you don't have the speaker fitted there, isn't it a shame that the space can't be used for a storage tray or something instead. I wonder if someone will pop along and make a centre low-profile storage tray or box and sell them.

Hello all,

I have been having issues with rattling behind the dash and have still not got to the bottom of this problem. However, I found a great way to remove the grille without damaging or breaking any of the clips. Simply remove the center air vents (there are 2 two retaining clops for each side, you need to lift them up an gently pull out the air vent unit from the bottom and tilting it towards the top). Once the air vents are out, you can reach inside the hole and press the grille clips carefully and then pull the grille out.

On my car I had no loudspeaker there, it was a huge empty space...

And please find some images below that show what to expect once the air vents are out:
