The dreaded DMF failure

Featured Replies

My old Yeti, MY 13, now owned by a family member has succumbed to its first major problem.

About a week ago the current owner rang me and asked what to do as the car was making a noise as though they had ran over something that was caught under the car. There was nothing there on inspection. The noise soon stopped soon ( 2 minutes) so botching done. After about 400 miles, at a very inconvenient time, it seemed to have a very severely slipping clutch and difficulty selecting gears. Getting it to the local Indy garage proved to be a good decision as the DMF had broken up and scored the inside of the bell housing(?) but not ruining it completely therefore no new gearbox necessary. 70 k miles, always serviced on time, short period servicing, only a little towing, driven considerately. Just bad luck and poor design I guess.

Not just the clutch pressure plate disintegration?.

If it has a concentric slave cylinder (inside bellhousing) make sure this is changed at the same time (sometimes part of a clutch kit)

as Ryeman said above, it could be the clutch pressure plate self adjusting spring has failed (common on the sachs setup fitted from the factory) and that has caused the damage.

Yes, it seems that the prime cause was the pressure plate which broke up. The DMF and housing were both damaged, the friction plate was hardly worn. All internal parts replaced and car now works perfectly again.

Mr Sachs strikes again, it seems.

Ducked a bullet then - usually when the Sachs pressure plate fails it takes out the gearbox

Good thing it didn’t fail towing uphill in the truck lane ......horrible thought.   Should have been a recall.
