59 L&K, no dimming door mirror?

Featured Replies

Still getting to grips with every toy on my L&K, after reading the manual and the internet (both infallible sources of information in my experience :D ) I was under the impression that the drivers door mirror should be auto dimming?

Mine isn't... Seems to be OE mirror and glass though. Reading the brochure from the time is clear as mud... The standard spec for door mirrors on the L&K is apparently: "Electrically adjustable, heated and foldable door mirrors with memory function", no mention of dimming. Fair enough.

Listed as an option for the elegance however: "Electric memory driver’s seat and electrically adjustable, heated and foldable door mirrors with auto dimming and memory function." So clearly it was available... No mention of that option for the L&K though.

Confused!

I have the same model and year as you.

I seem to have all the toys you mention, including the auto dimming mirrors.

How have you tested it? It only comes in to play when it senses headlights behing as fas as I remember. I certainly never experience and blinding from rear headlights. I presume it is linked to the central mirror which also self dims. Does yours have this feature? If not I guess you don't have it. Also is it set on auto?

I took the glass off to be certain, no extra wires loafing about! Changed the puddle light for an LED while I was about it though so it wasn't wasted effort lol.

I'm guessing it must have been an optional extra after all, unless the mirror got smashed off and replaced with a non dimming OE unit at some point in the past maybe.

To clarify, yes it does have the auto dimming interior rear view mirror, which is switched on and working just fine.

Sometimes the description of Items gets lost in the wording, " Eletric adjustable and folding mirrors "  The Glass is eletric adjustable, eletrical heated but the mirror folds in manually.

Do you have an Auto Dim internal mirror ?

The mirror does everything else... Heated, electric adjustment, power fold... But no auto dimming!

Yes, the internal rear view mirror is auto dimming and works properly.

When I looked at this for my pre fl L&K auto dimming was an (expensive) option. It was dropped as standard around 2006 or 2007. Whether the fl re introduced it as standard I am not sure but I doubt it. They did bring in power folding for the fl - this was never possible on the pre fl without using a unit from a different car.

I have an FL L&K, the only mirror that is auto dimming is the interior rear view mirror, no mention of the other mirror's having this feature in my brochure or owners handbook.

Well, at least it was available... And I'm not the only one without it!

Gives me something to keep an eye out for in the scrappy if nothing else ;)

Mine certainly does not have it.

I find the centre mirror feature pretty useless. I much prefer the manal way of dipping it and drive at night with it always dipped. Can't work out how to manually dip the L&K version. I may tint it. How does the thing work anyway?

(sorry, only just seen this is octy not sup)

There isn't a manual dip on the auto dimming rear view mirrors. The only switch is to turn the auto-dimming function on/off.

It has two sensors, one on each side, if it decides the light from the rear is much brighter than the front, it'll dim. You can test this by covering the front sensor with your hand when the headlight are on.

If you covered or tinted the front sensor, then the button should then turn the dimming on or off.

Well it looks like the glass is shared with a few Audi's, so the scavenging options are looking a lot better. Hopefully it will just be a case of running some wire to the mirrors and swapping over the glass, if I ever get around to it!

Pretty sure you'll need to run a wire from each wing mirror to the rear view mirror so it may be harder than you imagine. Certainly possible though :)

I've an 07 model L&K and I'm sure the auto dimming door mirror(s) became an optional extra as they're fairly expensive ... Both external mirrors are slightly tinted and look original but neither dims when or if the internal mirrors does.

About what I'd expect... I'll look forward to rummaging about in my scrappy in the future lol. I slowly retrofitted pretty much every option to my old cars, I'll do the same with my Skoda given half a chance.

Fitted the parking ticket holder just now, turns out it had one already that had snapped off :D

08 L&K here, not an option on mine as I specced it with everything except TPS.
