Modded MPG has nosedived - advice?

Featured Replies

I do a mix of city, town and motorway miles - usually about 100 miles a day. Before remapping the FVRS i was getting, on average, 49-52 mpg. On long motorway runs i was getting 56-60 mpg depending on how heavy my foot was. The car is 6 weeks, 3000 old.

I have just had a remap, and fitted the cupra 160 intake + green filter.

My average economy has nosedived to 42-44 mpg! This is a big sacrifice for the power.

What is the likely culprit? A mix of mods or the 160 intake ( i have heard they increase fuel consumption badly)? On previous cars my economy has never suffered like this - it weven went up on my Cupra.

Anyone else got a modded economy experience they would care to share?

Mine is currently 42-44mpg on average. It was around that even before my remap but this was with 17s and sticky toyo tyres. Never heard of any real drops in economy of 20% or more before. Might be the colder weather, or might be something else. Worth doing a fault code check I reckon. :)

I have VAGCOm and will do.

Just been reading a few more threads:-

The last week I have I have been running both heated seats on 5 (passenger in car!), fan turned up and have been keeping the lights on in this cold, dim weater - would the extra electircal load lower mpg THIS significantly? Just a thought.

Oh, and I have also been on some unfamiliar journeys this week - hence using sat nav and road angel more. Not to mention the iPod and Alpine headunit on full blast....

I might try switching some things off

Oh, and add to that the rear window defrost each morning for 15 mins...

Mine has always been around the 42-44mpg mark, never up in the 50's pre or post remap.

strangely though, since graham at celtic did his map tweak, my last 1000 miles have been more frugal, I am getting an average of 2mpg more over the distance.

I didn't think electrical load affected mpg, unless something alternator related happens? I just thought aircon affected it marginally?

How heavy has your right foot been since the remap? I always like to blame the driver. ;) :P

first tankful i allowed myself to hammer it, but around town i dont get the chance! I have reset the average and been really good - same driving style as before. I'll give ti another go with all the electric sapping toys turned off and report back. If aircon saps economy (which we all know it can) then stands to reason other power hungry units may. Imagine how much power heating 2 seats to that temp takes! Toasty though, and the ladies love them...

PD160 intake + green filter made fuel economy worse based on the fuel computer. That said I reckon it's still worth it as the engine notably likes it better.

Remap may impact it too, but probably mainly due to using the power more often

I have only got the 160 intake and greenfilter and if i behave on my way to work I can get 65-70 mpg sometimes more (mostly downhill tho!) I didn't notice a drop after fitting the intake apart from when I was trying to see what difference it made! mpg did seem to drop after fitting 17's but drove sensibly a couple of weeks ago to work and got 72 mpg so again it's just from trying to see what your mod can do i.e chucking it round corners fast to see if the wheels have improved things or trying to rev it hard to see what the intake+filter has done.

Mine got remapped a fortnight ago and I've been watching it like a hawk ever since. There have been a couple of periods when low air temperatures and high humidity coincided with a significant drop in logged mpg. Whether that's cause-and-effect I don't know.

At only 3000 miles, my fuel consumption was higher than yours - some folks say mpg figures don't make much sense until the engine loosens up at 5000-ish miles anyway. I doubt that the Cupra intake would cause a 6-8 mpg increase in consumption.

Must be in an area where you do a lot of 60mph then  - I cannot hit those figures when sticking to NSL, constant speed, reasonable conditions.

As for electrical load/aircon, it will probably knock 1..2 mpg off at most, and I've always driven on dipped beam anyway, so don't think that's been a factor. Fuel economy goes up/down with weather conditions + driving pace a lot though I must admit :)

If driving sensibly on A roads, then my mpg increased after the remap, by around 2mpg. However, on a motorway jaunt at legal speeds, its down by about 4mpg.

I however find that I use more of the power more of the time, and my average mpg has gone from 49mpg to 46. Its a small price to pay, the way I see it, I get double the SMILES per gallon!

The most i managed was pre remap when i did a trip to cambridge - all DC at 50-70 mph, no stopping - got 61 mpg.

Not sure how accurate the trip computer is anyway - as my old cupra did a true 23 mpg/300 miles to the 60l tank (worked out from full - empty, not trip computer), hence my VRS, when avearging 46 mpg (sometimes creeping up to 50) should have doubled the economy or better.

To test this i put the same amount of litres into each car (i part refilled the VRS and didnt reset the computer) - the VRS got 580 miles (compare to 300) to the same amount of fuel, so significantly under the trip computers 'average'. I think its a bit optimistic.

Journey length makes a big difference - a cold car doesn't return much so if you're doing 10 miles or less on a journey it might be poor compared to someone like me who does 5o miles to work in the morning hence rarely see below 50mpg.

Are you doing shorter journeys?

Either way, i'm not taking the mods off! I love the remap, but was wondering mainly if the cupra intake could be blamed - cant say i noticed a great difference from it or the filter anyhows - is there any conclusive proof that they improve bhp/torque yet? I have read a lot of hearsay, which is valid, but not quite scientific for my picky nature...:)

I am currently battling with the stealers to let me put my forge FMIC on - the tight sods say it will 'strain the engibne' - good job they don't knwo about the remap.....

my commute is Malvern to Birmingham - 35 miles - mix of slow bypass, M% and inner city traffic jams.

As i mentioned - on a run to cambridge i got 61mpg - its just that my commune average has dropped 10mpg this week and i'm looking for somthign to blame!

Physically check the temerature of the engine after a run.

If you put your hand on the top of the engine after a run (top cover removed) you'll probably find it is only luke warm + the radiator will probably be cold.

Because of the power output of the engines, it has very good water cooling.

This is Advantageous during the summer, but doens't allow the engine to fully warm up during cold spells - like we've got at the moment.

I noticed this just after Christmas, so internally banked off the lower front grill with an old rubber mat, cut to size and ty-wrapped to the inside of the lower grill.

Since then the engine has warmed up a bit better, and my mpg has risen back up to 48-53 mpg.

I hope this helps.

Firstly, the turbo on your engine does one thing only, increases the amount of air going in - this increases volumetric efficiency & thereby increases power output - further increasing this airflow will continue this trend.

Secondly - the Cupra tdi has an FMIC so they're talking cr@p!

I must be the only person who doesn't care about fuel consumption.

Nice to get 40+mpg (standard vRS) but it wasn't main reason for buying it

Sorry, but... :rofl::rofl::rofl:

As above, the usual side mount intercooler puts stress on the engine.... Its a well known fact that in the summer the inefficient side mount intercooler puts stress on the engine due to not being able to cool down intake temperatures enough.

Fitting a front mount will allow much cooler charged air into the engine and much better conditions for performance and efficiency. :)

I also don't see how the dealer can stop you putting it on? Its your car mate. ;)

Although the FMIC reduces the stress temperature wise on the engine, it won't help the turbo as that has to work for longer/harder to keep the boost up & keep it at a particular level.

When I fitted the PD160 intake the flexi had a little gap at the 'front' end which caused a bit of air leaking in from the sides. Cable tied that down and that helped

MPG wise, not much difference

I was getting 47-48 mpg before remap and I now get 43-44 mpg after remap but it was end of summer when I got the remap done and during winter I would expect a drop in mpg too.

Funny thing is that when I cruise at 80, I get less mpg than when I cruise at 90 (km/h ;)). Must be related to the fat toque increase at 3k revs as it's more effortless at 90

Although treating relatively gently (no more than 90mph with only 500m miles on the clock and no more than 3/4 throttle) am getting between 54 and 62 to the gallon.

Mines standard with a PD160 Intake & Green filter and I'm getting 35mpg on average!

Electrical loads can knock 10bhp plus a/c .

ARE hot seat really on - try another pair of tights!!!!??
