Update: it’s dead.

A complete new case as there is a hole in the side from wear the gears punched through

It needs new gears

It needs new mechatronic unit

It needs new clutch packs

new box is £3800

they had a 2nd hand unit but the mechatronic unit doesn’t match.

So, what next? I’ll have it relayed home and then bung it on eBay? It’s just a shell now isn’t it so £150 scrap?

depressed.

What's wrong with something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-GEARBOX-AUTOMATIC-DSG-6-SPEED-SUPPLY-AND-FITTED-04-08/222716690633

^^^ The likes of that could be perfect, maybe very good, but with them just check that is not the Company dissolved in June 2017.

Same with any other, just use Trusted Traders a trusted person can recommend.   Do your checks.

So, forgot to post back here with the final update. In short, the box was shot, the gearbox casing was pierced and diagnosis was that it was generally just toast. Replacing the unit wasn’t financially viable. Looked at replacing with a manual conversion but that option fell through so I’ve conceded to it being gotten rid of. Had a “we buy any car” type place offer £500 so far; would I fare better advertising it as a non-runner on here or should I go the painful way of EBay??
