Dashcam on tailgate keeps falling off... Help! Any ideas?

Featured Replies

I have a Nextbase 112 dashcam I am using for the rear of the car. For over 2 months it stayed obediently fixed to the top nearside corner of the estate's rear window. Now it has decided to no longer stay put.

Looking at the holder's vacuum suction cup, it shows contours of the heating filaments of the rear window. I suspected these prevent a vacuum being formed and applied Vaseline to improve the vacuum seal but it only holds for about half an hour.  Is there anywhere with no de-misting filaments on the rear window? Does de-misting (and the heated filaments) damage the suction cup?

How does anyone else attach theirs?  I'd be grateful for any ideas!  Many thanks, Rob

Could you use the side window? Does the bracket give enough reach?

The Vaseline will not help as it will act as a lubricant and therefore allow air to seep in between the two surfaces. To ask a question that perhaps you have covered so sorry if you have.

Make sure that the surfaces are clean and that the suction cap does not have any very tiny particles on it, though personally I think your problem would now stem from the Vaseline as I said above and until that has worked its way "out" of the rubber it will still continue to allow air through.

Good luck.

Hi Danny 57, hi PSM

Unfortunately the bracket is very short so a side window cannot be used. The vaseline trick works with suction cups on tiles in the bathroom (they hold for months on end) so I was hoping for the same but I suspect  that the anti-misting rear window heating filaments which stand a fraction of a millimetre proud of the glass are the culprits or their imprints in the suction cups so that air enters quite quickly.

Does no-one else have this problem?

I have had the idea of sticking sticky-backed clear plastic film to the window where I wish to mount the camera which will smooth over the filaments and provide a smoother surface for the suction cup to adhere. Will keep you posted how I fare. All the best, Rob

I've only got a cheapo camera on the rear and have not really had any problems with the suction cup. I have a Nextbase on the front and that has dropped off a couple of times in about 10 months.

you could use an adhesive mount and it would be stuck on permanently then

How about using those sticky reusable pads

Great idea! I have several of these at home "just in case" and could cut one to size!

They are thick enough to hardly pass on any deformation due to the filaments and probably will survive the de-misting heat. I'll give it a try!

I'll have to clean the glass of any vaseline residues though ;)

Great idea! Many thanks! All the best, Rob

Well, a bit disappointing.

Maybe the dash cam is too heavy. It holds for a few hours but falls off after a few hours.

I applied it last night and it had already fallen off this morning.

I fixed it again but after my 2-3 hour drive, it fell off again.

On my trip home I fixed it again and in an hour it fell off again.

Maybe I need to clean everything up again and have another go.

But so far, not strong enough. Maybe it will have to be double-sided sticky tape.

Thanks for your suggestions! All the best, Rob

A permanent solution would be Araldite but I'm not sure whether you would ever get it off again

Sticky pads that come off without leaving any residue usually need an hour "stuck" before bearing any load, so first suggestion would be to stick up only the camera bracket (if camera can be removed from bracket?) then leave for a couple of hours before then attaching camera.  Other suggestion would be to use a more sturdy pad that isn't easily removed, such as a replacement sticky pad for a central rear view mirror perhaps?

Many thanks @nicklouse for this idea - I'll give it a try straight away! Best regards, Rob

Update: sticky pad and bracket now attached to window; will add camera in a few hours.

Well, the sticky pad and bracket were still there, I have now attached camera, some 3 hours later.

Let's see what happens! All the best, Rob

Good luck!

I use a strip of 3M tape, Cost be pennys from ebay.

My Dashcam had been mounted for 3+ years on my previous car and never fell.

Bad news: this morning the camera was lying on the boot cover, having come unstuck.

I think I will have to try double-sided 3M tape.

Watch this space!

I love this thread.  It's like a soap opera, I find myself looking forward to the next episode.

I agree. I am really stuck to its every twist and turn; even if the camera mount isn't :D:D

There's a solution to this somewhere Rob.

Hello people! The final solution: 3M (actually continental equivalent called "Tesa") double-sided outdoor grade sticky tape.

I stuck the camera on this morning and it is still there after driving to Lucerne and back (100 miles). I had to wait until the outside air temperature was above 8°C since it advises against use below 8°C.

The tape was applied to the black circular suction base in three tape widths, all the same length so the circular base appears to sit on a small translucent square of tape.

I am very pleased! Thank you to @T00mm for the suggestion!

Best regards, Rob

I now feel a bit like when I come to the end of a box set on TV :D

Seriously though, I'm glad you finally managed to get it to stick. Really shows the worth of this forum.

probably a bit late to see this thread and reply now, but in the past I have used Sugru for all manner of tricky fixing jobs in the car, including dashcams, making hooks for retaining cables, holding rear window blinds and so on and so on.. It's a mouldable rubber compound...   very effective when combined with magnets too :)

I have heard of Sugru before (on another forum), but for some reason, I can never remember it.

Just to spite me, my rear camera fell off this week.

Thank you for this tip - I had not heard of it before but may get some to play with. It looks like fascinating stuff!

I have found several sources here in Switzerland.

Many thanks for the tip! All the best, Rob

  • 6 years later...

Just bought a Skoda Superb Sportline 2ltr petrol in racing blue and what an absolutely stunning car this is in looks/quality/performance.

But... have two problems.

1) The key will not set a primary user. Its being looked at Tuesday 4th June at the dealership so I'll update when I get it back.

2) No matter what dashcam I try (I have three) everyone drops off the boot lift after about 30 minutes. New and old have been tried.

Found this on YouTube 12 hrs later it isn't on the parcel shelf but still fastened to the glass.

A great step forward for mankind and Skoda user.

Oh boy am I going to be miffed if it drops off overnight.
