Mislead by 2.0 TDI against 1.4 TSI.Anything positive about the diesel?

Featured Replies

Now with the 1.4 TSI on the way out, if you want a new car the comparison will soon have to be 1.5 TSI    v    2.0 TDI

Despite the economy advantage of the 1.5 over the 1.4, I would be tending back towards the Diesel, at least until the more complex technology (particularly the turbo) is shown to be reliable. It may well turn out fine but I wouldn't want to be doing the testing at my own expense.

Come the time (not yet) when all petrol cars are also inflicted with particulate filters, that would probably be enough to get me looking at diesels - unless of course they get even more complex or taxed / restricted out of existence.

Reliability of diesel Vs petrol, modern diesel=modern petrol

They're both direct injection

There both turbocharged

They both have variable valve timing

They're both common rail

They both have the same array of sensors and logic

They both have crankshaft dampers and change mass flywheels

They'll both have Ballance shafts

Both long life timing belts

Petrol will have small advantage re lesser compression ratio and no dpf

Why does the OP think he will be doing the testing on behalf of VAG?

I’ve been to the Garrett development centre in my old job and before we were allowed to get a VGT onto one of our engines, they had run 2m hours cumulatively on their test beds and 5/5 had exceeded the 100,000 hours test. They also had HALT, environmental, vibration and all other simulated installs running.

Once we got our test units the design was already over 4 years old and the next 2 units were in development, we would then have to do all the integrated test work, installation tests mechanically and electrically before running 30,000 hours real world endurance tests on our fleet.

This was for Off Highway OEM Engines.

110,000 rpm is some speed for the current generation of Borg Warner VGTs to be running at.
