Mk3 octavia handbrake failure

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just interested to get an idea of numbers of people that have had a failure of there handbrake on the mk3 octavia

I have read a few threads on here about cars being parked for hours then the handbrake releasing itself causing the car to go for a little jaunt down the road

This happened to me recently ( the sticking the car in gear and steering towards the kerb has been done to death so i dont really want to go over that again) my issue is with the handbrake mechanism being either poorly designed or bad materials used and therefor not fit for purpose

I am just looking for numbers as ive had my car checked at a dealer and they couldnt find any issues but did say that if skoda received more than 10 complaints they would issue a recall (not sure how truthful that is) i had complained to skoda about this and im waiting for them to respond after the report from the garage

Cheers

No problem with mine or the many Octavias we have on the work fleet.

Its always best to leave it in gear and the wheels slightly turned towards the kerb... not sure if  you’ve ever read that anywhere?

I have never had an issue with any of my Octavia VRSs. Touch wood it doesn’t become a problem.

Good luck with Skoda, like you say if they get a few complaints they may issue that recall!

As discussed before if you dont press the button when applying it and us the rachet it holds, use the button and sometimes it doesnt. Button should only be used to release handbrake

I know this is an old thread but I just got reminded of the incident we had last year so did a little search again.

Our Octavia is a 15 plate, and last year unexpectedly the hand brake lever did completely release itself on a very steep drive way that it had been sat on for 1.5 hours.  We found the lever fully down as if we had forgot to put it on (impossible, we would have not made it out of the car first!) and yes, they found no problem, apart from a missing rubber 'bump stop'...as they could not find the bump stop they "replaced the handbrake as a goodwill gesture" apparently...

Anyway, I thought I would add this for the next person looking for more cases...

I pull it up with the button in mist the way, release the button then give it a pull over the next ratchet.

It isn’t unheard of in many brands where not quite being on the ratchet was the cause.

Mine holds on several inclines on just the one click. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it seems fairly well adjusted tension wise (which I like), so the most I've required is two clicks!

Not had an issue with it releasing though.

Thankfully mine is an auto, so I cant even get out of the car without it being in Park with out alarm bells ringing.
