Re-Map

Yetsail

Recommended Posts

Hi - I have a 2.0 Ltr TDi 110 BHP Yeti (60 plate) - and I was considering getting it re-mapped to 150 BHP - Im looking for some more power & torque and better economy. Are there any other owners who’ve gone through this process who could give me any advice? Can I buy a chip from the internet and do it myself or do I need to use a specialist and have the car dyno’ed before and after?

Thanks in advance - Paul

Have you checked with your insurance company to see whether they will still cover the car and if yes what the premium is likely to be.

Most remapping is now done thru the OBD port rather than re-chipping.

I've just gone for a Sharkperformance STS and remap on my 140, haven't implemented it yet as insurance change is next Wednesday as present insurance co said they wouldn't cover it. From all the feedback I've seen Shark and Revo have the best reputation.

I have the Shark stage 1 remap on my '12 Yeti TDI 170. Dyno readings before/after were 175 to 200 bhp, and 368 to 438nm. That was done 3 &  a half years/50K miles ago and no issues. Mine was one of the last chip out, fiddle, replace jobs, with it being available to do by the OBD port a month or so later. I wouldn't hesitate to get it done again.

I have a race chip box, used it on my previous 110bhp yeti worked well, easily removed etc took the output up to around 140   --  pm me if interested!

I cringe when people suggest this.

How would you remove the chip if the police are dealing with the accident you have been involved in, or indeed are lying in the ambulance. This is effectively creating a car which is not going to be insured when it gets checked over after the serious incident by the insurance assessor.

Not against tuning cars, may even do it myself when out of warranty, but it will be declared to the insurance company

^  How do YOU know my insurance details - I have never claimed to be running an uninsured box! nor am I encouraging anyone to use one without making a declaration to their insurers -  you make grave assumptions my friend!!

My current insurers Quote me Happy were very competitive for the last 2 years, however they stated that any modification such as a remap would invalidate my policy. Clean licence with max NCB so they sent me a renewal for my policy, which expires next Monday adding on a rise of 30% against last  year's premium. My response was to book my  34 month old VRS in for stage1 Shark remap, for next Tuesday and pay £120 extra to cover it using Sky insurance. I suspect that insurance premiums are rising anyway partly to pay for uninsured accidents.

Ken, Tony is in French France where they have very different rules about insuring cars.

Surely deceiving the insurance company has the same impact wherever you are?

Nobody is claiming to know anything about your insurance details, they are saying if a tuning box is fitted your insurance MUST be told and the policy adjusted accordingly if they are prepared to cover it.
Just so we are aware if we add something like that to our cars how much if any did your car insurance change when you fitted that +30 HP race chip box?

I fitted a Racechip unit to our 140bhp 2.0 diesel DSG 3 years ago.  Overall fuel consumption has improved by just under 2 MPG in the 30,000 miles since then, compared with the previous 15,000 miles (all figures recorded on a spreadsheet and based on brim-to-brim filling) and the car's performance and driveability is substantially better;  the fast getaway from traffic lights is a big improvement, as is cruise control - where it now rarely needs to drop down a gear in places where it always had to before the chip.  There don't seem to be any drawbacks except that the car's computer calculates the MPG readout based on how much throttle is being used, I believe, although most cars calculate the amount of fuel actually being injected;  this means that because less throttle is needed the MPG readout is far too optimistic, and the range figure is also overstated until the tank is nearly empty.  A small price to pay for the improvement in performance and economy.

My insurance company increased my premium by £16 (3 years ago) when I informed them, but even now it is only a little over £200 per year for 3 named drivers.

I chuckle quietly to myself when I see some of the negative comments about chipping diesel cars, almost always from people who have no knowledge or actual experience of how they work.  I used the same chip (with different setting and connectors) in my previous 3-litre Jaguar XF diesel, pushing the BHP from 275 up to well over 300 and also improving the consumption by around 2mpg in the 20,000 miles that I had it fitted.

Shark remap for me and no issues over the last few thousand miles.

I've run several remapped cars and in fact my old 2002 1.8T 20v 4x4 Octavia is still running fine, 15 years after it was mapped!

Just watched this: https://youtu.be/U9tvln5JUW4

Alternative view on mapping and, although he's somewhat entertaining, I tend to disagree with most of his statements.

I posed the following question recently on the "other" forum but nobody has been able to give me an answer so far. Anybody here who can help?

"Does the six speed DSG gearbox have a torque limiter and if so does anybody know what the maximum torque figure(s) are or where they can be found?"

I posed the question because numerous commercial sites advertising DSG software upgrades state that there is a torque limiter set at 350Nm. Supposedly if you try putting more power / torque through the box it will bleed off power by slipping the clutch, which is not good news on several fronts, in order to limit the torque.

However Shark, who have continuing good feedback on this and other forums, state that a Stage 1 tune on the likes of my 170 TDi will increase outputs to 205 bhp and 420Nm. Given the DSG torque limiter does the Shark Stage 1 tune therefore include some software adjustment on the gearbox. I have asked Shark directly but somewhat surprisingly have never received a response.

Thanks. I see that TVS talk about the box being able to handle 500Nm but I'm not sure if that requires an upgraded clutch pack - -my Dutch isn't good enough to translate the relevant page(s) ! However I see that they have an agent in NZ so I might contact them to pose a few queries.

Thanks again. I have found that I needed to log in for some odd reason. Not had that happen before. Anyway, looks like a very interesting link which I'll need to read through carefully as it appears to have the answers I'm looking for. I'll post again a bit later as I think many considering a re-map might find the TVS comments interesting.

Great link Awaoffski which answers my original queries.

The answers are:

(a) Yes there is a torque limiter on the DSG gearbox

(b) The max torque is factory set at between 350 and 380Nm depending on model

(c) If you try passing more torque through the gearbox than the limit the clutch will slip to bleed off the "excess"

(d) This will lead to premature clutch wear within 6 - 24 months depending on various factors

(e)The limit can be raised to 410Nm fairly readily but above that more mods are required to increase oil pressure and above 500Nm new race oriented clutch packs are required.

(f) There are ways of bypassing the DSG torque limit programming but that introduces a whole raft of potential problems.

I wonder if Shark do the latter when reprogramming the ECU to increase power (and torque) on the 170 bhp models and hence the reason they chose not to answer my email. It would be interesting to hear their thoughts / comments.
