Crank Sensor

Featured Replies

Afternoon All!

Apologies in advance if this topic has already been done to death.

Just got a little Fabia diesel with an AXR engine code. 160000(ish) miles so just run in. Anyhow, will not rev past 1500 & just dies when it gets there then picks up again once the revs drop. Also got the engine management light on & the glow plug light is flashing. Plugged in the diagnostic kit & comes up as engine speed sensor implausible signal. Code no 16705. Also got a p0 number but cant remember it at the mo. Looks like theres a nice new cam sensor on it.

Question is this.... Wheres the damned Crank Sensor? looked all over & cant see it anywhere. Any ideas anyone?.

It's down beside the flywheel on the engine block.

This is the usual position for it on most VAG engines

So it's at the rear of the engine near the joint between the engine & gearbox

Thanks Gents!

Had another look & think i found it behind the oil cooler. Bolts into the block & has a cable out of it that runs to a Grey plug right below the Cam sensor plug. Does the oil cooler have to come off to change the sensor? Looks a bit tight as is but may be doable...

Just checking it to keep up to date, i have a very similar problem but the engine runs up to about 3.5k before cutting out and then returning once the engine speed has reduced.

A colleague at work plugged it in this lunch time and found among others:

19463 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
            P3007 - 35-10 - No Signal - Intermittent
18097 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1689 - 35-00 - Implausible Message from Elect. Load Controller
16705 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
            P0321 - 35-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

We cleared the codes, just waiting to see if/when they return now, its drive-able for me but doesn't sound like yours is unfortunately. please let us know if you manage to find a fix!

Hey John!

Ours just had the 16705 code. Swapped the crank sensor without to much trouble & so far....all good. However, looks like the previous owner spent a load on it trying to get the problem sorted. Cam sensor, Cam belt & so on. Seems that he had the same problem & his garage advised all the earlier work then wanted to hit him with a bill of close to £1000 to take the gearbox out & change the crank sensor..... Price included new clutch kit & flywheel. Funny thing is.... Sensor isnt in the bell housing... Gave us the car to scrap or get going & use...

Hope you get yours sorted out ok.

Sounds like you may have the dreaded broken alternator load sense wire, do a search here, it's very common.
