Bit of a `tweak`.

Evening all!

Been looking at possibly getting a remap done for a bit more get up & go along with easier driving & fewer gear changes. Seem to be a whole stack of companies offering this service with a stage1 remap going up to around 130BHP & costing in the region of £250-300.

Would i get the same result with a VRS Engine ECU from flea bay for about £50?

What do you reckon?

Yup!

VW stuff so might have been plug & play.

Seen the complete VRS package, ecu`s, keys & lock, instrument panel & so on for under £150 so still cheaper than a remap. So if just the ecu is a non starter, how about the complete package? or would camshafts etc need changing as well as exhaust etc..

It's the turbo that's the main difference, that's where the extra power of the PD130 really comes from.

If you want to do it on the cheap, the blacksmoke remaps aren't the worst thing in the world and are fairly cheap

@Paxmanmerv - Absolutely not; the vRS has different turbo, camshaft and injectors to the 90 and 110 TDis.

I would 2nd that, as he has good reports over various Skoda/Audi/VW forums. There is obviously a cost for the lead to upload the map which you will have to buy/borrow to identify you specific ECU and carry out the download/upload - which you must be confident about doing yourself following the instructions on their site - and it will be a generic map, if he has one for your specific ECU, but for about £60 (map and lead) its a good cheap option and probably better than a tuning box.

Dead easy to do too. Nerve wracking whilst it flashes but it essentially gives you a brand new car in terms of how it drives.

That looks like a good option to me. Will have a look at his www!

The risk, of course, is that if the update fails for any reason, you stand the chance of junking the ECU. That's one of the reasons remaps aren't £10.

While it is possible to do something wrong, Blacksmoke quote on their website "We offer 7 days support to repair bricked ECUs from the date of purchase. Beyond this time support is there but is chargable.", and I have yet to see a review where anyone has had a problem. Their preferred MPPS method does appear to offer a possible recovery mode, and the instructions are very clear as I have used this programme for downloading then re-uploading my original map with the EGR disabled.

As with all these things, you need to be comfortable/competent, and accept that going the "cheap route" can be a risk, so Paxmanmerv must carry out his own review/research.
