Which ABS Sensor? - Rear Right

Featured Replies

For the past few weeks, often when I start the car, I get ESP, TPMS and ABS warning lights come on. They generally disappear after a few min driving.

Occasionally they will pop up when driving but then disappear soon afterwards.

A VCDS scan gives me the below.

I previously had a similar problem on the front NS, but the fault wouldn't clear at all, and it turned out to be a broken ABS cable.

I've had a quick look at the cable in the wheel arch, and it all appears fine.

First thought would be to just change the sensor as they are cheap enough, but which do I need?

Car is a 2005 1.9 TDI DSG Combi.

Euro car parts list 2 when I put my reg in:

This Bosch which is listed at 78mm Length

Or this Eicher which is 42mm length

Which is right?

P.M. me your reg No.

When fitting the new sensor its worth checking the clearance to the sensor ring on the hub, the hub can rust pushing the ring towards the sensor wearing the end of the sensor away causing the fault code you are seeing, if the ring is damaged its time for a new hub/bearing,

Just my opinion but i would fit am OEM sensor, ive seen fleabay sensors die way to prematurely,

It might be a good idea to have a hub ready to fit when you do the sensor as you will need to remove it to knock the sensor out of the back plate as it will be rusted in.

I am in the middle of a similar set up to this. Went to remove old sensor wouldn't twist or pry out so typically snapped clean off at plug end. Went to remove disc and didn't have an M14 spline bit for carrier bolts so left it. I put a self tapping screw into back of old sensors remains and it pulled out easily with a claw hammer  New sensor in (bosch) and lights still coming on after code cleared comes back. Did some logging on VCDS showing correct speed for that wheel but with drop offs. I only later having changed sensor noticed the tip of the remains of old one I pulled had a groove worn in it... New hub to fit but no time so it's off into a garage tomorrow when I'm at work and crossing fingers new sensor isn't FUBAR'd... Car will have covered 7 miles with new sensor, but only takes a turn of the wheel to knacker new one....

My understanding is that you can tell if its the sensor or the hub by logging the wheel speeds in vcds. If the log of the wheel in question is usually recording a speed but occasionally drops out, then its likely to be the hub, but if there is no speed logged at all its likely to be the sensor. I have had this on two wheels and its been the hub both times.

There's a ring on the hub which is magnetic? (I think) and I guess the sensor picks up the field. When the ring rusts the field is damaged and occasionally the sensor fails to read. That is probably an over simplification but gives you the picture. Of course it could be both parts if there is no speed logged because the rusty ring has also damaged the sensor.

In summary, you replace the hub first if vcds shows speed readings with occasional drop out for the wheel in the vcds measuring blocks.

Thanks for the help folks :)

I've ordered the cheapo eBay sensor as a first port of call.

If the old one is damaged because the ring has rusted through, it's not a biggy to then replace the sensor again if have to replace the hub later on.
