Higher torque doesnt mean its faster. you just get a nicer pull low down in higher gears which makes it easier to drive under normal driving which gives quicker pace for less work.

A big wave of torque also gives the illusion of speed too which is why TDI's feel faster than their N/A petrol counterparts (even if they're not!).... :D

I'd say the lighter car would win. You wouldn't need as much torque to move it. Also the more aerodynamic car would win at high speeds (also needing less torque to move it). Torque and BHP are linked. So cars with matched BHP or torque should be a similar match. Where weight isn't linked. A 1000kg 100bhp car is quicker than a 2000kg 100bhp car.

A 130bhp Saxo vs a stock vRS. That would be interesting.

when did we start swapping the cars in the comparison

I thought it was just the engines

so what we need it 2 of the same cars when engines are out are the same weight

i.e. has the Ibiza got a Cupra 160bhp diesel and and petrol 150bhp

(closest i can think of)

or a deisel 130bhp with a petrol 2.0 (there usually near 130bhp except for the VW range)

Will - It sometimes makes me chuckle/worried to think you have a degree in a physics related area ;)

Mk4 Golf 150bhp in PD and 1.8T guise? ;)

Chris

Mk4 Golf 150bhp in PD and 1.8T guise? ;)

Ah, but then they don't weigh the same, and the 1.8 wouldn't be N/A. :D

Rob.

I've lost track of the "rules" ;)

I did Physics and Astrophysics and also it was from a really good Uni

don't forget the really good Uni :D

Chris

thats good choice of engines

so whats the comparison of the 150bhp Deisel and 150bhp Petrol

stats etc

Ah, but then they don't weigh the same, and the 1.8 wouldn't be N/A. :D

I assumed they weighed the same with the engines out as Will suggested ;) And would it be fair to compare a turbo against a non-turbo :P

Sorry - I've forgotten already ;)

Really good Uni, Will? I thought you went to ******

Chris

Up to 80mph the diesel is actually slightly quicker probably due to the extra torque, after that even pace. if the 1,8T is caught off the hop it will be thrashed by the PD150, . The 1.8T has top speed 134 and the diesel has top speed of 135

I find that bcos the vrs peak power comes in so soon that i can get away from a petro car from standstill. they end up revving more to get in the powerband and 99% of the time they will be wheel spinning off the line as i leave them in a black sooty cloud. by the time they are making use of there revs ive hit the mid range and slowly pull away.

key thing is to feed the power in on 1st an 2nd or risk smoked tyres. by 3rd you'll be doing about 45mph so its ok to start nailing it.

this is just my own opinion from my expirence's in my vrs.

It's a driver thing - I reckon a seasoned driver in grandma's car would 'have' a novice in something much quicker.

So it doesn't matter.

also the tyres make a really big difference

I used to drive a revo'd vRS and my mate a standard Scooby WRX 05 (225bhp) model. On the twisties he was much quicker, and from a standstill, but over taking on A roads and on the M-way, I could just about keep up. Mind you he is a fat B@5t@rd and I'm not!

Tried it with another WRX once coming back from Silverstone, the Scooby driver looked puzzled as I stayed in his mirror......until we got to a round about, he slid round it so I gave up before we had an off!!

If you were following - how could you know he looked puzzled ?

I'm puzzled.

i think they did the 1.8t vs 150 pd on topgear or some show. maybe a magazine.

they opted in favour of 150 pd

How come our Fabia vRS tops out at 110.Is it electronically limited like an M5/RS4?

I'm puzzled.

does your car not have a rear view mirror??? They work both ways you know!!

How come our Fabia vRS tops out at 110.Is it electronically limited like an M5/RS4?

Yes, kind of, except rather than going to the expense of fitting a huge heavy powerful engine and then heavy electronic limiting widgets, they've followed the logical path of fitting a smaller, lighter, less capable engine which then doesn't require the electronic limiter.

Ingenious!

Rob.

:D Cost cutting on an Aldi scale I say.Scandalous.

I have no idea what you are talking about? 110mph???
