DSG Gear Knob - Chrome peeling

Featured Replies

Can anybody help?

The chrome plating on the push button of my DSG gear knob is peeling off and I am left with a sharp edge that catches my finger,

Any ideas, has anyone had similar problems, the car is well out of warranty.

under the Consumer Rights Act all products must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. warranty has no bearing assuming it is a manufacturing defect and not damaged.

Plus one for me, though I will add that leather gear knob can wear and peel when people continually leave their hand on it. Not saying you do "but" do you and do you have a ring on the hand, if not then back to plus one.

Buy it from SuperSkoda here

Had the same problem, initially wanted to get one from SuperSkoda, but since it doesn't have a 4x4 DSG label I decided to find a used one, and managed to do so. If it will peel in the future, I'll get it chromed (the plastic plate on top), so far so good (photo shows the old set).

I do wonder a couple of things for this wear, just my thoughts at the moment; no science.

1) Do you use this gear stick often I.e. Use manual mode ?

2) Perhaps have some form of hand product on, causing a reaction to the surface of the chrome ?

In my case, I'm a fairly new owner, so can't discuss the previous car's usage in detail ... your 2nd point would make sense (or just if someone's hands are prone to heavy sweating, that should do it) ... the manual mode, I guess that's a lower impact (in my case, I know that the previous owners used the steering wheel paddles for shifting when they wanted more fun, which are still like even new after 162000km)

Thanks for everyone's  commentts.

Just few answers to the many questions

I do wear a wedding ring, i don't   use the manual option (too old, too idle and I've paid for the auto so why not use it).

The peeling of the chrome is on thè top of the push in knob. The edge has started to peel and is little uncomfortable when you sqeeze it to move the lever.

I don't wear hand cream or any other products, and i can't remember the last time i sweated, in the car.

I have tried a gear knob cover, but the one i found wasn't a great fit.

The process of changing the knob and lever looks to be more complicated than i would be willing to undertake and i suspect that the dealer would want more than i am prepared to pay.

Again thanks for your comments but the problem remains.

Mine has the same issue... otherwise immaculate but the trigger is sharp and chipped across top edge.

Mine has the same issue too. I also came to the conclusion that what seemed like a minor thing to fix would actually end up with me breaking something so it stays as it is sadly.

I have the same problem.

I have managed to find what looks to be a cover that will fit which I've ordered. Hopefully it will keep my fingers away from the sharp edge. I've ordered one and will report back here on my findings.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I tried the very same item.

The cover was a poor fit and the hole at the front of item allowed the peeling chrome to still catch my fingers..

Hope you are more successful with your purchase.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop.

Ah well, at £2.50 I thought it was worth a punt. I'll let you know how it turns out with mine.

Update - part arrived and isn't a great fit. The hole for the chrome button is the wrong shape. That being said, I got it comfortable enough to use so I'll leave it on a while and see how it goes.

So my chrome DSG knob trigger is peeling. I found this OEM style and an alternate style of knob. I got the all metal Golf style one but you can get one that looks the same as my existing knob minus the 4x4 here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33042717253.html...

Here are some installation pictures. Notes:

Removing the panel is as simple as sticking fingers on the shift boot base and feeling under the edge and popping the thing off. You don't need a shim tool.

The hose clamp is hard to loosen and hard to re-tighten unless you have a hose crimper. I did the best I could with regular pliers. It's not going anywhere.

Biggest bit from service manual. Boot is part of the shift knob so not really meant to come off. I broke the bottom of the old knob trying to get the collar pried off but it worked.
