Navigation SD Card

Featured Replies

Hiya, clearing the car out and in the glovebox was the case for the navigation card

I have a new sport line and as standard will be the Columbus, but the SD Card and part number suggests it’s for Amundsen?

Yes, the SD card is only for Amundsen.

I don’t understand why they’d supply a SD card with Columbus.

Anyone else noticed this?

Any new map updates for the Columbus is done via the SD-Card.

Maybe they got confused.

I see, yes was actually just reading the other thread about the updates.  I guess they supply a Amundsen SD card with all and the key difference is a hard drive?

No they don't and I mention that before Columbus owners start querying "where's my SD Card?", though you're not the first person to inadvertently get an Amundsen Maps SD Card with their Columbus.

As you're aware the Columbus comes with the maps already pre-installed on the internal drive.

A few points;-

  • You cannot use the Maps SD Card to reinstall maps on the Columbus. It is not compatible.
  • The card is 32 GB but will show on a computer as being much smaller because of the way it has been formatted. Reformat the card to get the full 32 GB capacity.
  • With the card reformatted to 32 GB you can use it for updating your Columbus when new maps for the Columbus are released via the Internet.
  • Once you insert the Maps SD Card in your Columbus the security bit is set, even if you have write lock enabled, which means it can now only ever update your specific device. The security bit cannot be cleared by normal formatting.

PS: You'll also notice the Columbus map covers a larger area.

Thanks for comprehensive reply, so in theory a green SD Card for nothing then!

Will look at at map updates. As the car was December build I hope I have latest. A few new roads near me were showing, although I did have wireless hotspot on so don’t know if car is intelligent enough to rework the new roads in.

I can't believe how in 2018 we are still given 2008 technology, HDD? DVD?? Pay for map updates or poi???? Update via dvd or sd, not wifi?? And only twice a year?????

Consider for a moment the fact that Skoda think that a Columbus is worth £1600 MORE than a Bolero!!! Not even Apple is as cheeky as that.

The moment a major car manufacturer uses standard ipad or android tablet tech as the base of their infotainment systems then the jokes that systems like Columbus and Amundsen will be consigned to the history bin.

Rant over.

You can update over WiFi but then you're going to need to stay near a WiFi connection for it to update. If you have a good data allowance on the phone you could use that as a WiFi hotspot I guess.

how do u update via wi-fi?

i tried unsuccessfully to update via a USB drive on my Columbus.

i don't have a "spare" 32gb sd-card available.

Not tried it but when you tell it to check for updates you have the option of USB/SD card and Online. So if the car is connected to the Internet via your wifi at home it can update from there.

Although I've only downloaded POI I've setup using the Online/WiFi option.

Worth looking at the WiFi update option then as the car will pick my home one up with a massive 5mbps!

Did I read the map updates were free for the first year? Or is that just my wishful thinking lol.

Downloading the update at home over broadband took just under 1 hour but that has the data for MIB1 and MIB2.... over 5MBit/s that would have more than 10 times longer.

Wishful thinking, I’m afraid. It’s only for the lifetime of the car. :D

Took the SD Card out and still have maps so I guess they put in error.

Anyone want to buy?!

It's a 32GB SD card so worth little. Use it for a camera?

I updated my Superb maps the other week whilst driving using the Internet - I have a decent plan on the mobile so turned on the WiFi hotspot and used that. It didn't update all map areas/regions.

I didn't plan on doing an update but whilst driving with the WiFi hotspot on (so I got TomTom traffic info) it noticed there were updates for my route.

Ahh yes I was going to look at connecting it to my home so Wifi if that would work.

How much is it tomupdate and is is this located in the settings?

Update alert!

I had a call from the dealer saying they have installed a number of these unnecessarily in cars with the new Columbus. And asked if I still had it as it’s worth £200!

I said I did recall it but genuinely I am unable to locate it now, the card that is. The box is in the house and I reckon the card has fallen down somewhere.

Anyone else get get a call from their dealers?

if I was a dealer I wouldn’t be mentioning their value. Although I looked on eBay and seem to be going for £40. They are welcome to it back when I find it.
