I'd always wondered regarding the idea of MPG improving as the car is "run in" - certainly some years ago cars required to be run in - not exceeding certain revs for first 1000 miles etc, but given improvements in modern manufacturing techniques does this still hold true?

The last few new cars I've owned have shown no upwards trend in fuel economy over 0-3 years / ~ 60k miles.

Same here, current Golf mpg from new with 15k miles has pretty much stuck at 27mpg

This was on my 3rd day of owning this week. Need to top up tank again as only true way of getting real mpg. Also was in a bit of slow traffic.

I'd be happy with av 52 mpg. Highest average I've had so far is 44 mpg on my 18 mile commute, about 13 of that on motorway.

I notice you have "eco" mode switched on which probably helps. Not sure I have that option on an SE tech.

After only 200 miles I am achieving 44mpg on a long run, mainly motorway cruising at 70mph.  When I first had my 2015 1.4 Octavia it achieved a similar mpg at the start and slowly improved to around 50 mpg after 25,000 miles.

As an engineer I am a great believer in running in a new car over the first 1,000 miles.  Varied driving with a mix of town, country and steady motorway driving with steady acceleration and keeping the revs below 3,000 for the first 500 miles and 4,000 for the next 500 miles.  After that I also believe that an engine benefits from a monthly hard drive with hard acceleration taking the revs up to 5,000.  Using this routine the Octavia never used any oil between changes.

My Octavia 1.4 DSG averaged over 40 mpg over 44000 miles and never used oil either.

I have run in the Koraq progressively, but do admit to being a spirited driver and normally cruise using ACC well in excess of 70!

The shape of the Koraq l ends me to believe it can never be as economical as the Octavia.

Is eco mode possible in the manual??

Yes mine is a 1.5 manual petrol SE Tech. The drive mode was an option when ordered. I have not gone over 2000rpm as pryorkshire says running in is so important. Likewise my last 2 new cars never used a drop of oil and again driven hard at times. Suprisingly last night i did the same route and it only did 46mpg. Only thing I did different was turn off stop start and lunchtime moved the car from one end of work car park to the other and back home turned lights on. Tomorrow going on a long drive.
