Wheel size vs ride quality. 18” or 19”?

Featured Replies

Sportline comes with 15mm lower suspension as standard

I changed  from a Superb II on 16’s to 18’s and noticed fuel economy wasn’t as good but it rose well and looked great. I’ve since just changed to a Sportline on 19’s and it rides almost as well as the older car on 18’s. Skoda have done a remarkable job I think

Note the tyres are way more expensive on the new one even on 18’s as the old model ran on a v common 225/40/18 where as the ones have a 235 wide tyre

Ride quality is still good and better than a MKII on 18’s

Good point Gizmo and one I can understand given my SIII on 18s rides better than my SII on 17s - I'm guessing DCC is responsible for that? Rifleman is in a slightly different position though as he already has an SIII on 18s with DCC. Would have loved 19s on mine for the looks, but read horror stories about tyre cost / short life etc and it put me off.

I guess a test drive is the only way to really find out - but it would need to be on the roads you drive most often, and preferably over a long period of time.

Got 19's on and the ride is fine.  Can be a bit stiff and fidgety on crappy rough roads in Sport mode, but the Comfort setting really smooths that out.

On good roads they are perfect, in any mode.

The size of the car really suits the large wheels I think, small wheels really take away something from it's appearance.

I think it all depends on the suspension:

I owned a Mondeo Titanium X Sport with 18" wheels, sport suspension only, no "modes".  Ride was very very harsh, you could feel your fillings rattle over bumps.

I then had an Audi A6 S Line with 18" wheels again, had different suspension modes and the ride was good, fairly soft compared to the Mondeo.  Yet others I know felt the S line was too harsh.

Guy I worked with had a Vauxhall with 20" wheels.  They looked brilliant but you could feel every single undulation on the road- no suspension mode option.

Skoda DCC works very well... go for the 19's!!!

As above I was referring to the standard spec of the Sportline.  It does sit quite close to those pictures.

here in oz, we can option the car with an "image pack" which gets the sports suspension, lowering the car by 15mm.

the images i posted is a Superb with H&R lowering springs, which lower the standard Superb by 30mm, and the sportline (sports suspension) by 15mm.

I'm guessing emissions, bigger wider wheels and tyres are heavier and take more energy to push around

Dont think so ! Why other similar car have agreed 18-19 inch wheels and this one no !

I m affraid not to have different transfer box , andto have problem if i put 18 inch
