Non O.E. alloy wheels

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a set of Alloy Wheels & winter tyres and have been delighted with them - 16 inch (not new but excellent condition and previously fitted to a Yeti). Of course apart from the safety aspect of them it is good to keep my standard fit alloys away from the vagaries of winter motoring.

However, there was a slight imbalance so I took them to a mate who specialises in alloy wheel refurb. colouring etc. He gave me the car back and told me that he wasn't finished and would need it back. I was surprised but he explained as they weren't O.E. they din't seat concentrically. This I had never come across before as I had never used non O.E. wheels before. When I fitted the wheels you couldn't detect by feel that the wheels were mounted slightly off (it was only by the smallest of margins). Wheel bolts were supplied with them and it was impossible to detect they were not in perfect alignment.

He explained that he had ordered spigot rings which would eliminate the issue. Having taken the car back the imbalance was still apparent and to be honest I was sceptical that the tiny amount that the fitting was out by would be overcome by these spigot rings.

Doubting Thomas no more. Once fitted car magically transformed to its normal excellence. This may be common knowledge but I hope it may be of some value to some members.

So the centre bore was too large.  Glad the spigots are in now as the bore takes the weight, the bolts just hold in place. Worth checking taper or radius bolts too.

Worth sharing for others.

Even though 30 plus years in the franchised dealer system, it just illustrates what I have said before - we (generally) are G.P's as opposed to Consultants in the Industry unless we have a specific interest and knowledge in one particular area.

Never too late to learn.

I bough a set of non-OE alloys for use with cold weather tyres for my CR-V.  The centre bore was slightly larger (71.6mm) than the OE wheels (64.1mm) and they came with a set of spigot rings reducing the wheels' centre bore to the correct size.  I didn't have to ask for them, they were included FOC as I had included the details of the car they were going on when I ordered the wheels.

Spigot rings are a standard way of adjusting wheels with over-size centre bores to fit a car's hub.
