Featured Replies

I took delivery of my new suberb 1.4tsi on friday loving the car so far but have a question on auto hold?? How does this work? everytime i set off on a hill i roll back i though that the auto hold should prevent this?? i put the car in neutral foot on the brake engine stops put the clutch in get in to gear take my foot off the brake onto the accelerator and i always roll back, i though that auto hold was supposed to prevent this??

please help!!

You should have a button to activate this function. Symbol is an "A" with a circle around it. On left hand cars its located to the bottom left of the gear lever.

It's on the bottom left of the gear lever on right hand drive cars too.  I guess that Chorea's car is a manual, so I can't comment anymore as I'm only familiar with an auto on the subject of auto hold.

I found that earlier but it seems to disable the stop start function is that right?

Hrmm - might be remembering the symbol wrong but the button is there along the disable start and stop.

I can take a photo in the morning if no one else answers before.

Yes, but the auto hold switch is behind the gear lever, not in the line of switches to the left of the lever.  The start-stop disable switch has an A in the centre with an arrow around most of it and an "OFF" label below.

The auto hold switch also has an A in the centre, but is surrounded by a ring and brackets to the left and right of the ring.

The autohold switch is the one to the left of the three illustrated ans sit below the gear lever. If the auto hold is active this button lights up with a green colour and a corresponding symbol appears in the maxidot. The stop start button is the one in the top right hand corner of my photo.

Maybe you are confusing the twoas they both have an 'A' symbol. Details can be found about page 202 in the MY17 owners manual

They obviously ran out of the letter S when designing the button layout...:wondering:

@Chorea Bear in mind that Auto-Hold is only enabled when the switch beside the electronic parking brake is illuminated.

Auto-Hold is disabled when the car is new. For whatever reason it will revert to being off until you have activated it (turned it on) during at least three ignition cycles. Thereafter it remembers the last used setting.

As to how it works...

When you brake to a stop and take your foot off the footbrake the system maintains the pressure on the service brake - and your brake lights remain illuminated**.

A green (℗) symbol is illuminated on the instrument cluster to show Auto-Hold is holding the brakes on. It's wise to check (℗) has illuminated before taking your foot off the brake.

As soon as the system detects acceleration it releases the service brake and both the (℗) and brake lights extinguish.

If Auto-Hold is enabled when you switch the ignition off then the service brake is released and the electronic parking brake is automatically applied and the (℗) changes to (℗) in the instrument cluster.

If Auto-Hold is not enabled you need to apply the electronic parking brake yourself.

** If you want to be considerate to the motorist stopped behind you at night just flick on the electronic parking brake to extinguish those blinding brake lights.

also remember Auto-Hold and Hill-Hold are two different things.

Hill-Hold Control will prevent u from rolling backwards on hills.

this is part of the ESC.

Auto-Hold, when active, will hold the brakes for u.

this is part of the Electric Brake

thanks for the reply's everyone

So i have the Auto Hold on but the start/stop function seems to have been disabled and i get symbol of A with a line through it?? Is this standard that the start/stop function becomes disabled when you select the auto hold? I have the green P and a A with a line through it to indicate this. Someone else who drives a kia says that the start/stop function kicks in after around 10 mins of driving is this true??

The start-stop function is disabled automatically for a number of reasons, mainly if the engine isn't warmed up, there is too much load on the battery or if a DPF regen is in progress (though the last one doesn't apply to your car as it's petrol).

i find that in the summer, start-stop kicks in much sooner than the winter for obvious reasons as mentioned above.  Maybe in very cold climates, it doesn't operate at all in the winter?

Theres lots of reasons Start/Stop doesn't work

In our Superb Mk2 - the main reasons are : Heated Seats / Air Heating on, Cold weather outside (below 4 degrees C), car not running very long, Heated windscreen on (I know this is an option on Mk3 Models).

The reasons above are because those systems are dragging too much battery current and its a protection system to prevent battery drain.  After a good motorway run, it should kick in automatically.

Re the KIA stop /start question.

The stop / start can function in the first few feet of driving if all the requirements for stop / start working are as needs be.

If it is only kicking in after 10 minutes that would maybe be as with any manufacturers Stop / Start, battery too low, battery demand too high etc.

I'm not sure how warm it has to be, but my car would cut out at the end of my road, first thing in the morning.

My stop/start sometimes doesn't kick in for 20-30 minutes. It's down to the battery condition, I'm sure. I park on the street and often don't move the car for a few days. Now that it's cold, I've got lights, heated seats, climate control, etc. etc. and the battery has to charge up before the stop/start works. The other day, I took the BRB for a quick motorway loop to charge the battery. Next day, stop/start kicked in first time I came to a stop.

The stop/start system is not connected with the auto hold so the issue is not connected.

You can disable the system by pushing the button and when in this state there should be a yellow lamp lit in the button and you will get a warning in the maxidot saying 'stop/start system de-activated.

If you are sure that you have not switched it off and the A appears with a line through it then it is telling you that conditions are not correct for the engine to be stopped. Others have outlined some of the reasons why. The system is not obviously malfunctioning.

However, if the condition persists (it is NEVER available) then you probably do have a fault that the service people will need to check for you.
