Skoda Octavia MKII Jerks When in D or R Mode At The Start

Featured Replies

Hi,

I own the Indian version of Skoda Octavia MKII which is branded as Skoda Laura. Its a 6 speed classic DSG automatic gearbox.

Recently, I am facing a problem - When I start the car, I feel no power in D mode during slight acceleration. When I press the gas pedal, the car jerks or jolts and then move ahead fine. The same thing happens in R mode. The car runs fine after the jerks. This happens only at the start.

I shown it to technicians and mechanics, they have tried everything but the fixes are not working. I remember I had received a glow plugs warning before the problem started. Also, the mechanics told they had to clear the fuel tank and filter as it was having too bad diesel.

Experts please suggest what can be the issue? The VAGCOM shows no error.

  • Yes. My car wasn't jerking before during the initial gear change in D or R. It started jerking like a month before only.

transmission problem?  oil change /top-up needed?

  • Author

I guess its a transmission problem may be. But the VCDS doesn't show up any errors. Also, changed the transmission oil around 5Litres. What can be the problem? The car just jerks during the D or R mode initially and drives normally. Also, observed that car was burning more fuel.

Mine does this, moving off from a standstill gives me slight jerk or two for a second before moving off. It concerned me but I looked into it and it seems to be regarded as normal on these cars with a 6 speed DSG, I had my DSG oil changed and the mechatronic reset to factory and it still does it.

This is very uncomfortable in a bumper to bumper traffic conditions in my city. Are you still driving with such issue? Any fix your dealer recommended?

Yeah it still does it. The car has been driven by the dealership twice, none of the two drivers were concerned. It wasn't pointed out by any of them as an issue.

I did read that with this gearbox rather than creep forward in traffic like you would in bumper to bumper it is better to wait for a bit of a bigger gap and move forward. Do you find if you put the accelerator down further that is is less jerky? Mine is an octavia VRS so I think it performs better with heavier acceleration rather than small pockets of acceleration.

I am very gentle on accelerating at the start and doesn't press the gas pedal too fast. The car sometimes hesitate to move even the gear is in D mode - have to accelerate a bit and then it jerks forward and move ahead smoothly. Skoda Assistance is a rip off for one's money and they will suggest replacement of complete gearbox. Have you ever tried DSG reset via VAGCOM? Did it worked?

Hi,

yes it was reset at the dealers for me and they did they initial 30 min drive to reset it too. It has made it better but not solved it completely.

Found this on another forum...

I disagree. Plenty of chats on plenty of forums worldwide (and by motoring journos) about the 'hesitation' of DSG boxes from standstill.

I find that is the case especially when starting from cold (it gets smoother once the transmission oil is warm) but if you don't allow a split second between brake release and throttle application the DSG box can jerk...and no matter how many times I've tried to 'teach' the missus she still doesn't get it lol.

You can easily adapt to this though and for me it doesn't detract from the benefits of the box in terms of lightning quick and ultra smooth gear changes on the go.

when was the DSG gearbox last serviced?

  • Author

I guess it was never serviced. The car was used by one of my colleague and I got it for a very good deal.  I changed the gearbox oil with 5.5 Litres. What is the capacity of gearbox oil tank? Am I low on it?

Nice write-up on procedure. Based on a previous research, about a year ago, these symptoms, with no TCU faults stored, indicate low oil level on the DQ250 gearboxes. Let a professional do the change.

If that does not help, maybe clutches are worn to a limit, that will probably need changing, or a SW glitch maybe...

This is my knowledge based on internet research, I only have on-hand experience with the DQ200 DSG.

Really a nice article. But can you let me know how much litres of DSG Gearbox Oil I will need? My mechanic did a change of 5.5 L only. Also, is it a Mechatronics failure? That will be my worst nightmare.

  • Author

Thanks it's a really detailed article. I think my oil level is fine as per manual you posted.

The car still jerks after the oil change. I am confused as the car doesn't show any error in VCDS. The car only jerks or jolts in D or R mode during low RPMs.

Anyone who faced similar issue and resolved it? Any DSG config required? Thanks!

Did you do any Basic settings of the DSG? Or the service guys?

  • Author

Not yet. We aren't aware of. Even the service guys are not aware of. Can you help with the basic setting steps please? Not sure if it needs a software update - but it was running fine before, this problem came all sudden.

What type of oil was used when you changed it!?

  • Author

It was synthetic gearbox oil for VW, Skoda. Quite expensive.

My dealer is still not able to figure out regarding the jerking problem.

Changing gearbox makes no sense to me.

Yes, but was it VW oil or another brand of oil that stated it's ok for a dsg gearbox?

The correct oil with filter costs about £100 in the UK, all the things I have read say don't use non genuine oil as it is known to cause issues such as you are describing, probably due to the additives in the oil not being VW specific causing problems with the clutches,

@pavan_h - I'll repeat that the brand of oil used may be the issue here. In particular I would not recommend the use of Sylkolene transmission oils with VAG cars because they're well documented as causing issues with initial take up of power (automatics) and baulky gear changes (manuals) although they're generally excellent in other makes of car.

The car was jerking even before the oil change. We thought oil might be the issue and we filled 5.5 Litres of new oil and the problem still persists. Is it some setting issue with the gearbox that can be fixed with VAGCOM? I remember before the car gave us issues, it was showing glow plug error on dash.

Ok so I see two issues here,

1. You have put 5.5 litres in, did you set the level of the oil with the engine running as described in the link I posted above, if not you have over filled by about 1 litre, also was the gearbox filter replaced?

2. You seem reluctant to state the brand of oil used, if it's not VW oil then that coupled with to much oil speaks volumes,

it's possible the jerking before the oil change was due the the old oil being worn out or incorrect level.

I only owned my car for 4-5 weeks before I noticed this, I will say that when the weather warms up the car doesn't do it. So only really temperatures of 5c and below.

I had an DSG oil and filter change from Skoda asit was due and I had the mechatronic software reset. It still does it, most noticeable with a cold car/engine but even then when moving off from a standstill it is slightly there. I have mentioned it to Skoda, as I have stated when it was software reset their driver had to drive it for 30 mins, nothing was mentioned about it, recently it was driven by one of theri drivers who picked it up and collected it from my house and he didn't notice an issue. From my research around the internet looking at all forms of "Jerky DSG" it seems common and many say it is usual as it isn't a fully automatic car, it is semi-automatic and this is just how the software operates at low RPM/speed.

However I don't know how bad yours is, could be the same but you notice it more due to start/stop traffic in a very busy city.
