Which steering wheel fits?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a MK2 octavia vrs with no mfsw and I feel like I am missing out.

I've read quite a few steering wheel threads but some of them are very old.

Can get a Skoda superb v3 steering wheel for £100 which seems like a bargain. Are all the airbags the same? Mk2 through to mk3?

Anybody got details of extra part numbers of connectors etc i will need? Why do some steering buttons work and not others?

Something also I read about the steering wheel controller module?

What's the best looking but value for money?

Guessing that's the original mk2 VRS wheel (only came with flappy paddles though right)? So that's no good for me. I also don't like the 4 prong steering wheel.

Any help much appreciated.

Ps. No maxidot but that is also on shopping list.

I'm interested in this also.

The old threads are probably accurate, not much has changed around the MFSW for the MK2 Octavia recently.

MK3 style wheels

The MK3 Superb/Octavia buttons will not work with a FL MK2 Octavia. This is because the FL MK2 Octavia is based on the PQ35 and the MK3 Superb/Octavia is based on the newer MQB platform.

If you want a MK3 style wheel, you need to use buttons designed for a PQ35 based car, namely a FL MK2 Superb or FL Yeti.

The MK3 wheels use different airbags to either the pre-FL or FL MK2 Octavia, so you would need a new airbag too.

Steering controllers

If your car doesn't currently have a MFSW, then it's unlikely your steering controller will support a MFSW. Therefore you would also need to replace the steering controller.

Be warned, there are three(?) different styles of steering controller throughout the MK2 Octavia range, these are not interchangeable so you need to make sure you buy the right one.

Maxidot

The right buttons on the MFSW will only work with with maxidot. If you haven't got a maxidot they won't do anything.

DSG MFSW in manual

Some people have removed the paddles and blanked off the holes, not sure if there is a FL MK2 vRS MFSW without DSG paddles...

Best value/looks

That's completely down to you and what bargains you can find! Personally, I prefer the 3 spoke MK3 style :)

Cheers for the reply. Very useful info. Thank you.

Looks a better option :)

There are two different generations of buttons, early ones have green backlighting and newer ones have white backlighting. Earlier Octavia's have 1K0 steering controllers which aren't able to illuminate the white backlights although the buttons work normally. Not exactly sure when the change over is.

I used 5E0 919 719 F (green) buttons which work with all controllers. Newer 5E0 919 719 L (white) buttons have issues with 1K0 controllers but work fine on my 5K0...569 controller. Not sure about 5K0...549 controllers. These buttons do not support DSG paddles.

I don't think this will be a problem for you @Jrhoop as I expect your FL will have a newer steering controller, a VCDS scan will confirm.

ok thank you. Think my next job is to work out what steering controller I have.

Have a look in my build thread - I have fitted a multi-function wheel from a VRS DSG but with the paddles removed and blanked.

@langers2k

So I can get a MK2 FL yeti MK3 style steering wheel which I think is up to 2013 year.

Any wheel from 2014 onwards is a no go?

Or any mk3 wheel and swap the buttons over.

There is no MK2 Yeti ;) All Yeti's are PQ35 based so there is maximum year limitation on them - ignoring the illumination issue I mentioned.

As for the Superb wheel, as long as it's correctly listed and from a MK2 FL it should be fine. Production stopped in 2014/2015 so ideally ask the seller to confirm the part numbers before purchasing as MK2 FL and MK3 wheels look identical. The MFSW buttons come off pretty easily to check.

So the safest option is an early yeti wheel to get the green buttons that work with either controller. All very confusing. Do appreciate the support.

If I went with a dsg mfsw wheel and blanked the paddles like dilksie did .....

I'm guessing the fabia dsg steering wheel is the same as the octavia MK2 mfsw?

Why do all the steering wheels only have the left hand side buttons. I guess I could buy the right hand buttons but does anybody know the part code to find a price.

Now I'm trying to work out the steering controller. 1K0953549CH seems to be the one most people recommend.

But i dont known if it can replace what I currently have in the screenshot. 5K0953521BL or is that something else?

Hi dilksie,

Yeah I perused the Ross tech site but my part number is not there.

Isn't your part number 5K0953569 as stated at the top of the screen? Do a scan in VCDS and it will give you the exact part number rather than going into the module itself.

  • Author

Only me again. Did as you said dilksie and this is what i got. Guessing the module control code is 5K0 953 569 C which is a midline according to Ross Tech.

Therefore i think i am right in assuming i need 5K0 953 569 H

Quoting Eddie-NL from the other post:

Quote

you have one ending 569 so as long as you buy one ending 569 it will be ok

Only thing is not to buy one from a passat as that doesn't have an ignition switch

569E

569H

569L

569AL

are ok for the Octavia 2 FL

So yes a H will work, so will an E, L or AL

Brilliant. Thanks for replying.

Ready to hit the buy button. Annoyingly the 569's are more expensive than just the 1K0's.

I found the same when carrying out my upgrade

Did you also replace your stall at the same.time?

I assume having a 5K0 the two stalks are the joint unit. (5K0953502M)

Instead of being able to replace the single stalk.

Edited by Jrhoop

Yes they are the joint unit and I haven't replaced the stalks yet. I am still searching for a set without the trip buttons that don't cost a small fortune. I just coded out the trip buttons so they don't work

  • Author

I picked up a stalk unit for £42.50 del.

Just want to do the whole lot in one go.
