Bye,Bye H.I.Ds

Featured Replies

Well suppose we will all have to replace our H.I.Ds ,according to new M-O-T regs starting May 20th, nice while they lasted , suppose it is back to c****Y headlight bulbs.

i know about dpfs but didn't read about HIDs. Aren't they illegal anyway? (not road legal)

Can't see anything in the regs to say you can't retrofit HIDs to a vehicle (haven't read the lot yet) but... this below is concerning (bit in bold).  I have never seen any DRLs extinguish with a PB or P on an auto transmission...

DRLs must switch on and off with the ignition or its equivalent, however, DRLs may not operate when the engine is not running, or when the parking brake is applied, or when the park position is selected on automatic transmissions. They can also be manually switched off, in which case they may not illuminate until the vehicle speed exceeds 10km/h or the vehicle has travelled 100m.

EDIT: Just seen the bit about conversion from Halogen to HID - It does say you can't convert a Halogen light to HID - but allows for a PROPER swap out (ie new light units)

It is buried in the new regs I am afraid

Not buried, just there in the new manual. Read what is written from May 2018.

But that does not mean an examiner will be doing any more about checking closely than they have been now since the last UK MOT manual changes.

Lets see how many Diesels with 'Visible Smoke' still get a pass, and how many with dodgy headlights, no self levelling or washers are passing.

i find the new HID information rather vague if I am honest, what it seems to be referring to is reflector headlights and the associated spread, but I haven't seen anything that mentions projector (as you would have on a Monte Carlo).  When I asked a MOT tester the other day about it he said I needed to have headlamp washers otherwise its a fail  (Wasn't that a rule from the 2012 changes??).

I guess the over-riding rule will be the EU marking requirement on the headlamp?

Either way, I'm just going to swap H7 halogen in for the MOT, then put the HID back in, or maybe I will treat myself to some of the new 7000lm LEDs.

The draft Tester's Manual says this:

Some vehicles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs. If it is clear that such a conversion has been carried out, rather than replacing the entire unit with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs, the headlamp should be rejected.

That's on pdf page 55 of the document which you can download from here:
