Intermittent powered steering

Featured Replies

Hi all!

My partners 2003 mk1 skoda octavia has developed an intermittent powered steeing fault. There are no waning lights on dash. The steering randomly goes heavy and difficult to turn. It also feels as if it's slow to respond sometimes. I have checked fluid level, which is OK. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Only just had wishbone replaced 2 days before this started to happen, but i'm sure the two are not connected.

Thanks

Jake

@jakeeboy - Check the auxiliary drive belt tension. If that's low the PAS drive is likely to slip first and most noticably.

+1 on the drive belt as first point of call - however, take it back to the garage that changed the arms, and get them to check the bottom ball joints - just in case. I have known arms from the cheaper end of the market (think ECP value range, Trupart etc) have poor quality ball joints fitted. As these are part of the steering system, if you have a dodgy one, then that can cause an intermittent heavy steering if it is sticking or tight.

as above OR even wrongly fitted    --has happened
