Head gasket and alternator belt

Featured Replies

Ive got a head gasket that measured 1,5mm with 3 round holes, the ones available vary in thickness from 1,22 -1,35mm with three holes or there is no specs given, AUQ engine.

Also alternator belt comes in two different lengths, which is the correct one?

It's manufactured 01, steeringwheel on left side if it matters and sold in sweden.

The longer alternator belt is for cars with air con.

With the head gasket I would get the same

@MarkusDaMan - Am I reading your OP correctly? You have a used and hence compressed head gasket that's thicker than the specs for new ones?

Measured using a digital instrument, was a bit sceptical but will try with a analog. What is the original thickness for the head gasket?

Yes, it measured 1,5 according to the digital instrument ive used, but I will doublecheck with a calibrated one.. could it purposely been fitted before to lower compression?

Anyhow, will check again, would be bad fitting a OEM one? if the previous one gave no issues for at least the 20000km I put on it..

Why I removed the head etc was due to a broken thermostat and water pushing out from the gasket (minimal but still visible)... Nothing wrong with the head and couldnt see any defects on the gasket either which makes me wonder..

Did have some coolant loss previously but got worse after the incident and couldnt find any other leaks, oil and water was perfectly fine etc.

Had the head turned in to a profesional too.

@MarkusDaMan - OK, even with a petrol the only reasons for a thicker gasket are:-

  1.  To lower base compression, and the only reason to do that is to allow running higher boost. Has the car been mapped? If so, by whom?
  2. To compensate for a head that's already been planed but is staying at standard CR. The only reason for doing that is if the head was already warped, which suggests a prior overheating incident.

Regarding your para 4, have you checked the head for warping? A really thick pane of float glass is all you need to see if the head is warped

Head wasnt warped but did plane it as little as possible I was told, previous owner suggested it may have been mapped but no papers on it, does indeed have more power than original RS when compared with a friend's but could be because of various reasons.

Not sure how to go on from there, plug in computer and check?

I will have the gasket measured again as I was in a rush when I earlier measured it just to avoid any unessecary work..

Fit the thickest one you can get. By the time it is compressed by the head bolts, it won't make a lot of difference to the compression ratio anyway. Usually when different thickness gaskets are used, it is to do with the piston crown height above the block, which shouldn't be a major issue if the timing is spot on - won't matter if the belt fails on these anyway, as they are an interference engine, so will smash valves regardless.
