Wifi connection for Skoda Connect

Featured Replies

Right, i'm having my new vRS245 delieverd on Friday and trying to learn as much as possible before it comes, so i don't get too frustrated! :)

From what i have read, there is no actual built in WiFi 'hotspot' within the infotainment system (even though it states this in the brochure). It looks like you can connect your phone, but i was hoping to have a 'permanent' connection, in case i don't have my phone with me etc.

Is the best way to acheive this with the 'Carstick' I've seen this talked about on the forum, but can't see where to purchase it? I assume that you then have to insert a seperate sim?

Will any internet dongle work?

Sorry, i know it's been talked about before, and i have looked at other threads, but they haven't really givem a clear answer, or got a bit too technical for my liking....

Anyone?

Wireless Dongles left in the Arm Rest or Boot 12V Aux Socket seem to be an option.

any wifi hot spot or phone should work so long as its not using the EE - The biggest network in the UK! I'm getting increasingly frustrated with mine and will get a wifi hotspot and GIffgaff sim if its not fixed be fore may. Road tripping to north of scotland so want it all to work!

Thanks for that.

Giffgaf do payg data only sims. So if i buy one of those, i assume that i will have to buy a seperate usb dongle? I thought i saw a picture of a sim card slot in the octavia somewhere?

I suggest you use your phone as a hotspot for a month or two before investing in a sim. I’ve used the facility twice since getting the car back in June last year. It’s a complete waste of time for me.

No SIM slot in FL models, certainly not in my MY18 model as far as I can see. Skoda offer a USB dongle but you'll lose a USB connection.

I've been looking at the Huawei E5573bs-322 4G Mobile Wi-Fi on 3 for around £10/mth plus £40 purchase fee. I've not looked that hard yet....

As @SC03OTT rightly says try using your phone first to evaluate the content, Mine uses my iPhone Hotspot and doesn't connect/I don't connect it very often but I've not had need to use Connected services in the first 2.5 weeks.

Sim slot comes with Columbus, not Bolero or Amundsen. You don’t have to get a usb dongle and waste the USB port though, you can get wifi hotspots/routers instead. As @SC03OTT says, it’d would probably only be of use on some sort of road trip unless you run your sat nav all the time, in which case it might pick up bad traffic if you have a motorway commute to work like I do.

However, You can’t use your phone as a hotspot if you’re on EE! So thats 20Gb of data wasted for me.....

The main reason I want it to work is simply because it bloody well should, or its badly designed! That and I hate the globe being red in the display, indicating it’s not functioning correctly.

Ok thanks.

What problems have people been having using EE for hotspot? I've used mine a couple of times without any problems :wondering:

My iphone 6 on EE has numerous problems connecting to the car. Once connected, Skoda Connect says "No Data Connection available" despite showing it's connected to Wifi. I can even share the iphone's data through the car hotspot and browse the internet on a second device. The car will resolutely refuse to see the internet though.

If I connect an ipad on Vodafone, it sees the internet instantly. Therefore I strongly suspect the issue is with EE.

It is with EE, Skoda have confirmed it with me and several other people I think. A work around is to plug the phone into USB and it will then connect via the wifi hotspot (on mine at least) but even when it says its connected, it some time won't connect to "Skoda connect" and says there is no data connection.

You will be lucky to get a mobile signal in the north of Scotland. The NW coast is bad and so are many other parts.

Just not enough masts outside built up areas.

Yeah, we're heading to buckie, so not expecting much up there, but also not expecting much traffic, so won't need to info!

We always go to Lossiemouth for ice cream..... Dunno why, must be fmaily tradition!

Long threads elsewhere on this but I have been seen several explanations.  The EE thing appears to be more of an EE/iPhone thing.  You can get it to work, but it involves a lot of faffing each time you get in the car.  It is also prone to dropping out during your journey so you have to stop and reconnect (or get your pax to do it).  Frustrating because I have a decent data package on my phone.

In the end I invested in a Huwai 4G MiFi on a O2 sim, a usb cigarette socket and 1” of male sticky back Velcro to hide it securely.  Paying £11 a month for 2GB with no up front payment which is more than enough data to run it.  It reliably connects within about 90secs of starting the car and can easily be removed for use elsewhere.  In O2 shops can also get a Huwai car WiFi for a similar deal, but it has no real advantage.

Yes it seems incredibly dodgy for me at the moment, I can make it work via the methods specified before, but using the Skoda oneapp or carplay (haven't figured out which yet) makes it show connected but not work, (it seems to just get confused when you ask it to use the phone for 2 different things)! Yesterday i had online traffic info by going "Menu>Traffic", but it wouldn't let me connect to "SkodaConnect" because 'No data connection'..... If it was just an iPhone/EE issue i'd be happy to try an EE dongle, but as it is I'll go with a different provider.

Ah, but was it RDS Traffic info, or actual online traffic? I find that if Skoda Connect has No Data Connection, then it’s not actual online traffic.

Online, the icon is different. It’s been good today, you seem to have to start the car and let the infotainment boot, then turn on your hot spot and let it connect while it’s still on the hot spot screen. It’s an ok work around IF I can get it to work with CarPlay on and the issues are caused by the Škoda OneApp (Onecrap?), so I just wont use it. For my road trip I’ll probably still get a dongle so I know everything works though

I recently purchased a Three 6GB over 12month data sim for £17. Granted it was for the Superb but those two options above (which evidently include the modem too) seem to be priced a tad high.

My major gripe is that we should not have to resort to buying dongles and hotspots for our cars. Having spent £20k+ on a car, I expect things to just work! I shouldn't have to fiddle around with settings each time I get into the car, just because my iphone is on EE.
