Wifi connection for Skoda Connect

Just this second ordered an O2 4G dongle with 12gb data that lasts for 12 months for £54!

The two teenagers that sit in the back, and who are forever using up their own monthly data allowance on their mobile contracts, are much appreciative of the effectively unlimited WiFi.

12GB = effectively unlimited? I think your teenagers may soon prove you wrong!

It's 20GB pcm - but I'm sure they'll do their best. (Especially on the 6.5 hour journey to see Granny!).

I recently purchased a Three 6GB over 12month data sim for £17. Granted it was for the Superb but those two options above (which evidently include the modem too) seem to be priced a tad high.

Have you seen the price of a 4G hotspot on Amazon?

My major gripe is that we should not have to resort to buying dongles and hotspots for our cars. Having spent £20k+ on a car, I expect things to just work! I shouldn't have to fiddle around with settings each time I get into the car, just because my iphone is on EE.

Completely agree! But it’s just pi55ed me off too much and I’m fed up with messing about with it. I’m hoping that with the data working (and in my case, my wife can use it to stream, as she only had 2 GB on her phone & CBA to set it up.) then I will be able to use CarPlay/OneApp more reliably, because, like you I expect things to just work.

I’ve got 20GB pcm in my phone. I just can’t use it because I’ve got the most popular phone on the biggest network.....

(I generally only use about 1GB pcm as I’m always by WiFi)

Just paid Skoda £117.60 for a "carstick" which has in reality been replaced by the Huwaei E5577C which Skoda now send out instead.

Fine it works great, can connect your phone to it, take it with you, has big battery if you need to borrow the usb socket, connects on engine start, my little red world goes white, traffic data of the super fast kind and all the Skoda Connect services immediately available but....

Its £68.85 on Amazon.

That is cheeky innit.   :^/

Yes, the USB car stick was supposed plug in to share the data via USB, hence the cost. Very cheeky if they’re passing off a stand-alone Wi-fi hotspot in its place. I’d be asking for some money back and justification for the high cost!

I've gotten into the habit of just plugging my phone in when I get in the car.  I use Android Auto for everything apart from the radio.  If the kids whine enough, I switch on the hotspot on my phone.  The built in nav and traffic just aren't worth throwing another penny at in my opinion.

As I've said on other threads - the manufacturers need to just give up.  Put a dumb unit in it, that just does Android Auto and Carplay.  For people who don't have either - supply them with a Skoda badged, cheap android phone.

not sure about that, I like the sat nav in the car and don';t want my phone plugged in all the time. Car play is far too noddy and buggy to rely on solely

yes I agree, I thought the Car Play would be useful and agree that the dumb unit + phone route makes some sense, but the look and feel of the built-in is way better in my opinion too. It was just a shame that I didn't realise that any hotspot device will work. The manual leads you to believe that the carstick is the only option. Well it did me anyway, I never claimed to be Einstein   :^]

So.... I just had a call from Skoda UK and was provided with a succinct explanation as to why I can sometimes get Skoda Connect working with my iPhone on EE, but the majority of the time it doesn't connect. It would seem that the issue lies with the EE 4G data signal. If this is switched off and the phone is used with 3G, then the issue shouldn't present itself. I've yet to test this, but it would probably explain why I can, on the odd occasion, get Skoda Connect to work.

Ultimately, having 4G or 3G makes no real difference to me for daily e-mail use and web browsing. I seldom stream video on my phone. To deselect 4G, go to:

Mobile Data --> Mobile Data Options --> Enable 4G --> Off

Well not a good start.

I've had the car since last Friday and still haven't managed to set up Skoda Connect as the portal to register has been permanently down.

It seems they have a new address for Skoda Connect, https://skoda-connect.com. I had a bookmarked link in my browser and the old link didn't work anymore. There is (was) a Skoda logo on the upper left side. Clicking the logo connects your browser to the new URL.

Just clicked the logo in the top left and nothing happened?

This isn't right. I've had mine off for years to save battery and i actually turned 4G ON to see if that made it better (it didn't). What did make it better is my O2 dongle, it now connects almost instantly after the infotainment unit has booted up! Just a shame I'll never ue the data I get "free" with my phone!

Right, so i have finally managed to get an 8 digit code to input into the infotainment for me to activate skoda connect and it doesn't work.

It just comes up with cannot activate, or something along those lines.

Has anyone else had any problems activating it before?

If it makes difference, i am the second owner, so it may have been activated previously, although I am assuming with a different code.

I bought the 3 home fi device/plan on the 12 month deal a while ago and I get 40gig monthly. Seeing as it runs on a 12v DC supply, I got a switched 12v plug and made a lead for use in the car. It works a treat.

I must admit, I think that the car should come with a data card slot built-in and a hot-spot device, especially given the cost of new cars these days.

I'm hoping to collect my next second hand fl octavia sel dsg estate at the weekend, after searching the Internet for the last few months, I've finally found one with the spec I was looking for. The sales man at Simpsons skoda said that the cars WiFi hot-spot is tethered from my phone, so I guess it is just as well I get 20gig on that a month too.

Ok Columbus has a sim slot ,

It effectively makes the car your phone but with far superior reception.

Now nobody in Ireland does a non recurring data SIM so my solution is as follows.

Put up with normal phone reception and download an app called macrodroid from the playstore program it to turn on you phones hotspot when phone connected to car but not WiFi and more than  1km radius of home, app is super easy to use.

Skoda connect/skoda one app are both hardly worth the effort,I certainly won't be renewing when my free year is up.

Android auto is probably just as useful.

Mirror link can't comment doesn't work with my Chinese smartphone .

If mirror link works for you there are apps that allow proper multitasking,

I.e. run anything you like concurrent with mirror link, you tube,TV,etc.etc.

Obviously you shouldn't be watching TV while driving however.

Set this up with internet hotspot on my iphone, registration was easy and seems to work well. I’ve sent a couple of nav routes to the car to test it out which is a nice feature I can see myself using quite a bit.

I found I had to unlock my iPhone and go to the hotspot option every time I got in the car for it to connect. The result being I just never used the feature when I could just plug in and use CarPlay instead.

The other way to do it is via control centre, then long press / force touch WiFi and that reveals a bunch of other controls including a toggle for hotspot discoverability.

I can see Carplay winning out long term as Apple will keep it updated but for now the inbuilt nav seems ok. I like the extra display on the maxidot.

Ive tried this this morning and can confirm it works a treat thanks uchuff!! As long as you’ve already connected your phone once before it takes two seconds when you get to the car. Brill until Skoda and EE sort it out!!!! ;)

Took delivery of my 245 Challenge on 19th Dec and I didn't even know about this (not read the manual).

If you can wifi hotspot via a tether - then I'm buying a cheap android device and plugging it in and setting tether up..

Then you have a constant wifi connection.

Couple that with a product like "Find my [Insert name of handset manufacturer]" or Prey ( https://www.preyproject.com/ ) - you have a cheap tracker as well should the missue borrow your car :)

  • 2 months later...

Been looking at this and am unsure about the best way to go about in car wifi.

have an unlocked iPhone I could use and leave plugged in the car with data sharing on and use as hotspot, but been looking at some unlimited data SIM cards, some say you can only have one phone tethered at anyone time, also when abroad capped to about 20gig.

We all have data allowance on our phones, but thought it might be cheaper to get one card and a device that 4 of us can link to and use,

I have a FL with wilan  or whatever it's called!

Any ideas  guys?
