Changing Wheels/Tyres - Advice Please

I bought a Yeti at the start of February to replace my aging 03 plate Yaris, which was a freebie from my mum (pics attached). I'm planning to change the tyres to all-season ones, like I did with the Yaris. I've looked through a lot of threads and have decided that I'd quite like to change my 17 inch wheels to 16 inch ones. I'm planning on getting Dezent TD rims with Goodyear Vector 4Seasons (the original version) from mytyres - 215/60/16 tyres on 7J x 16 OS 45 rims. My only issue is what to do with my old OE wheels. Is it worth selling the wheels as a set, or would it be better to get a garage to separate the rims and tyres, sell the rims as a set, sell the 2 good tyres separately and chuck the Evergreens? Storing them isn't an option as I move house every 6 months or so due to my career choice and I live in a house share (renting a room in a house, as I'm 26 and my jobs aren't the highest paid (but better than working in an office :P)). I do have room to store them here for at least a few weeks though. I have just started a new contract so won't be moving for a few months now.

 

Also, could someone tell me the colour of my Yeti? I thought it was Aqua Blue, but someone parked their 63 plate Yeti next to mine earlier and it was a bit bluer but not as blue as the Yaris! Was that Aqua blue, or is mine Aqua Blue or something else?

Hi Mark, and welcome.

 

I suspect you'll get next to nothing for any of your tyres if you were to try and sell them - it'll probably cost more to take them off the rims than you'd get. Similarly, as your car has the very common standard alloys, they might not fetch as much as you'd like, unless perhaps they are completely mint and someone else has badly kerbed wheels. 

 

I know there's a lot of debate of 16" vs 17" but I'm pretty convinced that the difference is only marginal. When (if) you come to part with the Yeti, the lack of standard alloys may count against it, so if I were you (and I fully acknowledge that I'm not) I'd simply get all seasons on the 17" alloys and let the tyre fitter bin the current tyres.

One thing I would check before you do consider changing the wheels, is the attitude of your insurance company. Though the size might be approved the fact that they are not a standard pattern might not go down well and may result in extra costs.

Thanks for the responses! I think I'll stick with my original rims now, it'll be much easier. I'll phone my insurance company anyway as I'll get 94v rather than 94w tyres, shouldn't be an issue though. Luckily Direct Line don't charge me every time I call them. I've already had mudflaps added to the modifications list ;-).

Often 94W tyres are as cheap (or cheaper) than 94V. Shop carefully and save money.

As the load rating is the same, and V rated tyres are good to 149mph you should be OK in your 1.2. The W tyres are rated to 168mph, which is one of the reasons I don't exceed 165mph in mine.

You don't need to inform your insurancce company about the different tyre rating.

16" wheels are type approved for the Yeti. 16" wheels allow you to fit 60 profile tyres which will give you a more compliant ride than lower profile tyres. 16" tyres are less expensive than 17" tyres. Generally 16" wheels are less prone to kerb damage than 17" wheels - tyres better protect rims. I have never had any problem selling a car with smaller wheels as long as officially type approved. If you want to change then sell complete wheel/tyres, generally bought by people to use with full winter tyres.

If you decide to keep the 17" wheels then think about having them refurbished and fitted with new Cross climates. 

Looks like you have Aqua Blue. They did a very slightly darker version called Shark Blue. My first Yeti was Aqua Blue I quite liked it.

By a significant amount, too.  The 16" 4Seasons I recently had put on my Yeti worked out nearly 25% cheaper than the equivalent in 17" - that's a whole corner!

16" Nokian winters are currently £9 a tyre cheaper than the equivalent 17" tyre. That makes £36 for a set of 4 & no need to feck about buying a new set of wheels either...

Unfortunately changing to aftermarket rims is one of the first things boy racers will do to "mod" their cars. And who is more likely to prang their car by driving stupidly? Hence some insurance companies will see it as a warning flag of an increased claims risk and increase insurance costs accordingly. However if you phoned and said you were putting a set of OEM rims on you might get a different reaction. I got a set of winter tyres on OEM steel rims after checking this out, my insurers said "as long as they're skoda rims it isn't an issue".

You won't know until you ask, though.  My hard-won 16" Moons were tansferred from the 2.0 4x4 diesel to the current 1.2 petrol with my insurer's agreement.

Agreed, which is exactly why I suggested that they should check with their insurance company before doing anything.

In the end I decided to stick with the original wheels but changed the tyres to the all-weather ones. I sold the car a while ago anyway!
