Mystery battery draining

Featured Replies

I can't be the only person who has ever had this issue.  I've got a 2011 61 Reg 4x4 Yeti. Regularly serviced, no problems til now.  Used for towing so had to replace the clutch at the last service. Last autumn a couple of times I got that weird bonging sound out of the speakers when it had been standing a few days. So, replaced the battery.  A month later - went to start it and got a nasty rattling sound from the dashboard. Battery dead. Got it jump started and local garage couldn't find anything wrong.  Two weeks later - did it again, after a long journey. This time, before the battery died,  all the lights flashed and there was an error message about stabilisation controls.  Skoda dealer has had it 2 weeks - can't replicate the problem and hasn't the foggiest.  I'm on the point of telling them that if they think there is nothing wrong with it then they can have it and I'll trade it in for something else. But - I'm very attached to it .... Has anyone else had this experience?

You're not alone.

My 2013 is fine if I'm using it every day, but it drains to the point where it won't start in about a fortnight. I've changed the battery too, but still haven't been unable to track down the issue. There have been suggestions of drain from the radio but I've tried disconnecting this to to avail.

I've fitted a Ctek "battery sense" to warn me when the battery is getting low, and hook the car up to my ctek charger via the 12V socket in the boot when it needs a boost.

This shows how the level of charge reduces over a few days from full when the car isn't used:-

This shows how little the battery is recharged by a few 3-4 mile journeys :-

Even on a longer run the battery does not get fully charged - a 30 mile run may only recharge from 20% to 40% for example

My first Yeti was a 2.0 TDI 170 and it had a similar problem. It was eventually traced to an intermittent fault in the loom in the bulkhead after the local dealer spent lots of time on it.

Thanks!  I've had to Google what these things are but this really helps. I have to get them away from looking at the battery all the time.
