Solid feeling front suspension

Featured Replies

Hi all

My new Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG was delivered to me today. Really pleased with it until the drive home.

The front suspension seems to be really banging and thudding over potholes as there is very little suspension travel. My previous octavia vrs was firm but this doesn't seem right surely?

Any idea's?

suspension spacers left in is the first easy check to make.

Is that something I can check?

Just been looking at the side profile of the car and the front does seem unusually high?

Also check tyre pressure. When we picked up our Yeti last year the fronts were above maximum pressure and 20psi above recommended pressure. One of the rears was underinflated. That dealer used a dedicated pdi centre who were obviously half asleep.

I'd add the MK3 is quite a bit firmer than the Mk2 even on SE/SE-L. But bagging and thudding doesn't sound right.

Thanks will check it tomorrow.

Noticed the problem after about half a mile and a few very small potholes. Had me whincing all the way home!

Brightly coloured plastic/rubber transport spacers under the front suspension rubber gaiter, but you have to jack the car up to reveal them and to remove.

Confirm they are there first of course and then make the dealer fix it.

The worry is what other PDI things were missed.

Would hope they offer you some sort of inconvenience compensation as well.

Problem solved!

Suspension blocks had been left on. Very poor

If I had a quid for everytime this problem has cropped up on the Forum I’d have my own vRS by now.

Shocker.

Yup, when I took my current vRS out for a (pre arranged) test drive it still had the transport blocks in.  And when I got it home after purchase, all four tyre pressures needed correcting.

Rocket science it ain't, ineptitude it is.  Shameful.

A lot of dealers now do not do PDi's in the maintenance workshop due to the amount of cars they shift.

They do them in a PDI centre and these are done by people who are supposedly trained to do PDI's but are not fully trained mechanics.

I fell foul of this at Simpsons Preston when I collected our first Yeti. The tyre pressures had not been checked and I drove home with them in a dangerous state imo.

I also found out recently that my local dealer no longer valets it's own cars but now subs all cleaning out to a local Eastern European operation. That includes prep pre-car collection.

Thats shocking (but sadly quite common it seems) makes you wonder what they actually did during the "PDI". i hope you got some sort of frebbie as compensation (tank of fuel, cheaper first service etc??)

It does worries me that if something that important can be missed. What else wasn't checked properly :dull:

It's quite concerning really

Hi, Long time lurker...  I've been driving my TDI Octavia Vrs since 2015.  Bought it at end of a PCH deal as mileage was really low and the price was about £1k above Webuyanycar which seemed fair at the time.

Since then the firm suspension has been getting on my nerves somewhat (a change of job means the roads i travel on are worse than they were).

I've been rereading an old thread about people installing MK7 Golf suspension components - has anyone reading this got this currently done (or aftermarket parts) for the purpose of softening the ride?  Would appreciate any pointers/comment if so.

Thanks in anticipation...

I noticed an improve in ride quality when I changed to Eibach springs...

Even though the car was riding lower, it was also more comfortable.

Ok appreciate that, thanks.

Hi, just picked up brand new sel 1.5 DSG yesterday and although no banging, suspension does seem very hard! Could it be the same issue, how did you find out? Could you tell from looking or did you jack it up?

You should be able to turn the front wheel the look up the coils of the spring. The are easy to spot if they are in as they are made easily visible so the pdi guy doesn't miss them.

If you have 17" wheels on your SEL double check the tyre pressures. The Mk3 has firm suspension even on standard models and 17" wheels and above don't have too much give in the sidewall which means tyre pressures are critical to ride comfort.

You really need to jack the car up to let the front suspension fully extend as there is a gaiter in the way. They will be obvious. I found 2 in each side of mine after finding the suspension very hard, much better afterwards.

Thank you, I'll let you know how I get on!
