I got a giffgaff payg sim and the £10 I credited it with has only dropped by a few pence over 2 months.

  • Wow 200Gb a month for free

  • I use a 3 SIM and it seems happy to shiw 4G quite a lot.  Which is to say FAR more often than my phone can lock into 4G with its EE SIM.

  • When you stick the SIM card in, it asks if you want to use it for 'data' or 'phone+data' - if you choose data, then that's it... it is just a data connection for the Skoda Connect and Infotainment Onl

Lol.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you need to insert the SIM in a phone initially to get things up and running.

I have noticed more 3G connectivity with the Three SIM than my previous EE SIM. Everything else looks fine though.

I got a Three SIM ages ago for an old iPad - didn’t have to stick it in a phone first. But then I got it from a shop rather than get them send it to me, and the guy in the shop told me it was active as soon as they give it to me (guess they do it there and then).

And yes, my car seems to spend more time on 3G then 4GLTE. But then if they had a half-decent 4G network they’d have to change their name to ‘4’. They were only called ‘3’ because they only had a 3G network (no 2G - they piggyback on O2 for that, or at least did when they launched).

I'm pretty sure I activated my Three SIM just by registering it's number on their website. I didn't put it in my phone first, and ordered it from their website rather than getting it from a shop. Mine mostly only displays no better than 3G too, but that seems fine for downloading traffic data and fuel prices. I've never run out of the free data in a month, even when I was getting the satnav to display Google Maps pictures (rarely bother now).

I thought they were called 3 because that was the number of locations in the country where they had a good service. 8-)

In Ireland, I think that is the number of happy customers.

Grrr, "service unavailable".

The little logo of the world has gone from red to white though.

I got that when my previous card ran out of validity - it links to the network (white globej, but doesn’t allow you any data across it.

Just tried it in a phone to be sure, all good, it will happily browse the internet.

Put it back in the car...

Mine sometimes shows the red globe, even when I know I should have decent reception. It has always sorted itself out eventually. I’ve no idea what causes it - it doesn’t bother me enough to worry about, as I use the built in traffic information on the map as a convenience feature rather than essential.

Try turning the roaming off - that’s fixed it for me before now. No idea why, and turning roaming back on afterwards doesn’t break it again.

Should be, a few of the comments on similar threads suggest 150-200Mb per month.

I had trouble registering just now so asked them to register for me via their Live Chat. As way of an apology they credited the card with an extra 3Gb. More than ample now.

Have you also remembered to additionally register at Three.co.uk/freedata (on your mobile sans wifi) as that might have some bearing?

To do that Three are assuming the SIM is in a phone...

The SIM is registered though, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the setup in the car...

The wife said it worked this morning, until I pointed out to her that her phone was connected and that the reason it was working was more likely due to the fact she was using the data from her phone's SIM card rather than the one in the glovebox...

In my experience, if there is a SIM in the slot it will try and use that and only that. And if it can’t use that, it won’t work at all - even if there is a phone connected via Bluetooth.

That's good to know, perhaps it was using the car's SIM rather than the phone. Here's hoping.

I've told her to turn off the Bluetooth on her phone on the way home tonight and try it again.

I remember that this was already 'ticked'...

In the Telephone Main Menu, switch on the Business phone "interface".

All sorted, seems to have fixed itself overnight :D

Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you login to the online Three account then you should see your 3Gb and maybe the free 200Mb.

If you didn't register for the additional 200Mb then your (3Gb) data allowance will be cancelled after a month and you'll be back to square one!

SIM CARD WARNING - and help needed!

The Kodiaq Owners Manual says to insert a MINI Sim Card into the Columbus Infotainment module , however it should state STANDARD in the UK, as these days the terminology used to describe SIM card sizes are Standard, Micro and Nano.

Unfortunately I only discovered this after I inserted a Micro card which I wrongly thought was a Mini card, and I can't now extract the Micro one.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the Micro SIM out, without going to a dealer?

Your help will be much appreciated.

PhilM

Careful use of a couple of toothpicks is how I managed. One either side of the sim and lever out. Or it might have been sowing needles, can't remember.

That's great thanks.

So pleased I'm not the only one that made a balls of it!

Paid £30 for a SIM that'll give me a year's worth of data. Quite chuffed with that. A bit less chuffed when I found that my Skoda Connect licence had expired and that it'd cost me £80 to renew that for a year.

Anyone find a massive software update needed once they got their cars. If I select all updates (I assume all countries) it’s 13.5gb!!

How do you check?

What are the options to do the upgrade?

On a USB stick, or do you have to park close enough to the house so that you can pick up the wi-fi?

I looked on Skoda connect in the car and went through the menu to updates. Mine has a sim in the car, and it was looking to update via that!!
