Monitoring DPF with VAG DPF App.

I guess VCDS would be needed to tell the ECU the DPF had been cleaned?

Yes, there is a function in VCDS to run when the DPF has been cleaned/replaced, to zero the ash volume.

Can you add a link to the post in question?   The only 'maximum ml' figure I've seen mentioned is 175ml although people have reported hitting 250-300ml so I'm curious where 380ml came from

  • Why not sort out the engine type that the VAG DPF has a question mark against? Is yours the really a 1.6?

  • https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01JU11EZE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1   I used one of these, but it's on an Octavia not a Yeti.   Yes, mine is the 1.6.

Hello there. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? This doesn't look at all right!

Am I right in concluding that this means the dpf has been removed? Great news .... :-(

Certainly looks possible, either that or the app is misreading data from the ECU.

I haven't seen any instances of people suggesting this app misreads data. So I'm not inclined to think this is the case.

It does have a question mark after the Engine/Year!

Hahaha, oh, yes, so it does! Perhaps it doesn't have an engine hence the lack of soot! Brilliant. I'm going to stop putting the diesel in. :-)

It has identified the type, but, well, yes ...

Or that has been put in and the program disagrees.

Well, I really hope it's wrong. If it isn't I'm f"?*&^%

If the DPF has been removed, and that's something you're not happy with, then I think you've certainly got good grounds to go back to the seller....

I believe it's actually illegal to remove/gut/disable the DPF (even though many people do and it passes the MOT OK).

Do you ever see any smoke ?

Wonder if it's been remapped too.....

I don't see how I can return it. I've had it for over a year. They can just say 'we didn't take it out'. I didn't buy it from a big operation, just a small time dealer miles away from where I now live. Maybe if this had come up sooner I'd have had a leg to stand on, but it seems too long ago now.

I don't see any smoke. There was some over the winter at start up when cold, but I think that was related to the injector issues I had to deal with. It was also very dirty/sooty round the exhaust, but again, once the injector was sorted this seems to have cleared up.

I imagine loads of people are going to be turning up with removed dpf issues over the next year.

Could you post a link to buy what it is you plug in to use VAG DPF please. I have an OBD Pro but that won't connect to VAG DPF.

Is yours the really a 1.6?

& why not pull into a MOT Test Station, or a Garage or even a tyre and exhaust fitting centre and ask someone there that works on vehicles as their job, be them a mechanic or not to put the car on a ramp and see if the car looks like it has a DPF and will pass its next MOT as it did at the last MOT?

Tap the box for "Oil Ash Residue" as it's not selected at the moment and post the result.

It remains with the red dot beside it and says nd. No amount of tapping gets rid of it. Can't see how to get rid of the ? either. I think the garage ramp is the best plan.

Take the car for a run get it warm. Does the EGR closing figure change as you drive, if not the EGR has been mapped out. Which would lead me to think the DPF has as well.

I think the ? After the engine type is for the year.

If VAGDPF doesn't recognise the engine type it says so, it doesn't recognise my old Octy VRS which should have a dpf

A DPF that is missing or has been gutted is an automatic MOT failure (if its spotted)

The car passed a MOT less than 12 months ago and an examiner then was happy that there was a DPF or should maybe have had an eye test.

If it was a 'friendly MOT test station',  then they could be in trouble if at this MOT it fails for no DPF & it has not just had it removed in the past year.

Automatic MOT failure for tampered/removed DPF  has only been in place since May this year.

Failure for removal of DPF's or Catalytic converters with petrol cars built after certain dates has been a MOT failure in the UK before the MOT changes in 2018.  Just thousands were getting passed.

From February 2014.

Where that is identified, same as now after the changes.

Dont know what format those files are, but I can't open them

No need to open them or have them in your files, just type the words you see into a search engine and the same or similar sites will appear.

Hi Folks

I got my first car with a DPF a few months ago and heard that they fill up with "sludge" over time and need to be taken off and chemically cleaned, so I was looking around for some info on it and found that VAG dpf app mentioned in this thread.  I read that you needed a bluetooth plug for the OBD socket and got one of e-bay, a Vgate iCar unit.  I downloaded a trial version of Torque to check everything was working before shelling out on an app and, well, it didn't work.  The app basically told me the OBD device was useless.  Lights were on, bluetooth connected, but the car wasn't home so to speak, so the dongle went back,

Then I read some more on the subject and discovered most of these OBD devices were badly made chinese knock-offs using stolen designs that they didn't really understand.  Some apparently were even poorer copies of the knock-offs by other makers!  I realised that I couldn't tell if I'd  originally bought a "genuine" knock-off, or a knock-off of a knock-off.  I'd assumed that the price was normal for a genuine OBD scanner as I hadn't bought one before.

Given the cost of the car and the cost of a replacement ECU I suddenly realised I'd had a very lucky escape and my chinese OBD scanner could have left me with a ton of immobile scrap on my drive and cost me a fortune to get it fixed!  Can anyone recommend a *good quality* i.e. genuine, bluetooth OBD device that they've actually used and can say for certain will work with an early facelift Yeti (and with the android apps) without risking frying my electronics?  Preferably one that can be purchased from a real uk trader rather than via fleabay.  I'd really like to get a handle on this DPF active/passive soot levels regen thing and oil ash sludge build-up, but not at the risk of damaging my car with some chinese junk.

Thanks

@widdershins - it just depends what you want to pay...

I use VCDS which is able to monitor/log soot/ash levels but it needs a laptop connected. It's also quite expensive for occasional use at ~£225 for a 3 VIN edition.

The maker of VAG DPF app doesn't make any hardware but suggests you use OBDLink LX which is ~£50 on amazon or similar.

I think the Carista dongle is also compatible with the VAG DPF app and pretty cheap at ~£15.
