Vibrations at exactly 4k RPM

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Ive had some vibration/shaking issues for a while (this thread), and it turned out it was caused by the right side drive shaft. (prob out of balance). So i bought a cheap aftermarket shaft for around 50 euros that was replaced yesterday. And now the shaking is gone, well at least for the most part.

Now instead i get a intense vibration at exactly 4000RPM at every gear. There is also a slight hint of it at 2000RPM. But for the rest, it drives perfect. No vibration at 4000 RPM when gear in free/standing still. And also fine over 4K. The higher the gear the more intense the vibration.

Very different from the shaking i had before, and it was not there with the old shaft. It is VERY noticeable in 5th gear, and in all gears a little over 4K it goes away again.

My thinking is the shaft again, that the very cheap shaft i got has an imbalance as well. But weird its exactly at 4k in every gear. It almost feels like something is loose, but only at 4K (and slight hint at 2K)

In my daily driving it doesn't really bother me, but with longer drives on the highway it will be problematic.

Any ideas? The cost of a super cheap drive shaft?

This is a Fabia Station Wagon, 6Y5, 1.4v Petrol 16v from 2004. 4 new tires, wheels balanced. 128K km

It cannot be transmission related if it's tied to engine speed.

If it's an automatic gearbox I'd suspect the torque converter, if not I'd suspect the clutch/flywheel assembly.

engine mount is a possiblility

was in mine causing excessive vibration around 2.5k in a diesel

And indeed it looks like it is. Garage looked at it today, and the only thing they found was issue with a engine mount. Ordered and will have it replaced.
