Engine Failure What Are My Options?

Featured Replies

Hello forum,

Sadly this is only my second visit to the forum after my previous joyous visit in early Feb 2018 following the purchase of my 2012 Yeti from a dealer on ebay.

Two days ago I broke down on the M25 when an EPC light came on and a message about traction control or something. I tried switching the traction control off to no avail and as the car started juddering I pulled over.

I called the AA who replaced the HT leads and something else but this didn't fix the issue. I got the car recovered to my local Skoda dealer who have said that there is some combustion problem and to investigate it will cost upwards of £800 without a guaranteed fix, and are thus advising a replacement engine at the cost of £3900. The car has only done just over 60K miles. I am gutted.

I have contacted the ebay dealer quoting the Consumer Rights Act 2015  and that "... I would like you to put this right by giving me a refund/repairing the car at your cost.” , but have not heard back as yet.

I've also contacted the Skoda Customer Care Team.

Just wondering if any one else has had a similar issue, and what they did about it - any advice welcome.

I don’t think Skoda would be abliged to do anything on a 6 yr old car, your best bet is to get it back to the dealer where you bought it ,did you get 3months warranty .

make sure you do any correspondence via the eBay system you might be able to get them involved?

I didn't get any kind of warranty, just a Used Car Sales Contract with the seller's contact details. I'm not sure I'd have any luck going through ebay as I actually didn't win the car (my bid was too low) but the seller offered it to me later as he said the winning bidder couldn't collect on time (whether this was true or not I don't know), but anyway it might be worth seeing what they can do. Thanks both for your comments.

The other consideration is how did you pay for it? PayPal credit card?

Was it a Trader / Dealer you bought from and not a private seller?

Is it a 12.TSI.

How many miles has it done?

Did you check with Skoda the Service and Warranty Work History before buying or since?

How I wish I'd used a credit card now  - it was bank transfer :-(

He had a garage space and office and gave me a Used Car Sales Contract so I assume that constitutes a dealer, though am not 100% sure how a dealer is defined in law.

Car has done about 63K miles

Has FSH, just routine stuff. The car is a Cat N right off, apparently for wing damage which was put right at time of purchase.

Yes it is a 1.2 TSI

Sorry, but it looks likely that your stu**ed.

I think it'll depend what the problem was that caused the engine failure. If it's likely the fault was present when you bought the car, you might have a claim as it's less than six months since purchase.

Did it ever have a rattling noise from the timing chain on startup?

Yes it did have a rattling noise, thought the Skoda garage it's with at the moment don't seem to think it's the timing chain, and of course to fully investigate they're saying it's +£800.

Thanks, it didn't go through the official second chance offer system, but there are emails in the ebay system confirming it's sale to me. Interestingly I notice the "winning bidder" whom he said couldn't collect the vehicle has actually given him a positive rating for the purchase of the car! So he obviously had someone or another account shill bidding for him.

Without knowing what's caused the failure, I don't think you'll get very far.

.....if the ‘dealer’ wants to stay in business reputation is surely important.

Then I doubt you'll have any recourse through Ebay. More likely you'll get an earbashing for avoiding their sales protocol unfortunately.

Bit concerned with the SKODA dealer that is looking at the problem that they quote £800+        To repair the problem that they can’t determine!

They want £800 to investigate the issue, not to fix it ;)

Sorry your right £800+ for an investigation +£3900 for the new engine that has not yet been determined as the problem but it looks like they have it surrounded unless it’s something simple!

6 hours labour plus VAT is some quote even if they are taking off the head.

2 hours plus vat.  £300 tops.

Sounds like they are not that interested in actually diagnosing the fault and then getting the job of rectifying or repairing.   Just guesstimating.

/\ Seconded

what happened to"we will plug it into the diagnostics and find the problem within seconds  sir" or has it gone back to staring into the engine bay and a scratching of the back of the head/ass

Good suggestion, will do!

Get it to a VAG specialist.

And contact Citizens Advice Bureaux to see what recourse you have on the supplying dealer.

By law they have to warrant the car for 3 months - you may just be in that category.

If you haven't done it already, write to previous owner (as shown on V5 reg document), give them an SAE and ask them what mileage was, and if car missed/delayed any service or had problems at time they sold it, and which dealer took it from them, and at what date.  Advise them that you are just collecting information and whatever answer they give, you wont trouble them further, and thank them in advance for the info.

You cannot force this info, but if you get it and it is discrepant from the advert or what you were told, it strengthens your case against supplying dealer.

Another quick thing to do is use the Government MOT history check (advisories might give some clues about how well it was maintained, or any clocking etc)
