Fabia Swing to Amundsen upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2016 mk3 fabia S model with the standard swing system fitted. I have been offered an Amundsen unit but from an Octavia.

I presume this will need some sort of fascia adapter of some sort? Anyone know of any or how to make it fit?

Thanks!

You'll need a lot more than a fascia adapter. The unit in your car uses Component Protection to stop people swapping units about between different cars (called pinching in plain speak). If you want to swap your swing for an Amundsen, then I'd start by saving up a few hundred quid to start with, as that's a starting point financially, then you can factor in a load of hassle as well. It's by far an away more complicated than just swapping the unit and making it physically fit.

Oh I see, what needs to be done to get it to work?

First thing is to find out exactly what unit you're thinking of fitting. There's the Amundsen from way back 10 years ago, which isn't going tp be suitable anyway, then there's the Amundsen + from a little later (again not suitable), then there's the first generation Amundsen II (MIB1 technology) which will be a downgrade technically speaking from what you already have but you'll gain sat nav while losing other features, then there's the Amundsen II (MIB2) which will be comparable technically to what you currently have while gaining sat nav. So Ideally you'll need an MIB2 unit so that you can still get Apple Carplay/Android Auto etc (which are only available on this generation of unit).

Then you'll need a unit which still has the features your current car has, like DAB radio, Phone prep with sim card perhaps (depends what your current machine has and what you want really).

Easiest way, go ask the dealers to do it and be prepared for a sit down. They can't fit a second hand unit, but it should be done correctly and legally while retaining any warranty on your car.

Second way is to buy a unit which has been modified and patched to make it work without needing any further activation of the features you want, then going to the main dealers and having the Component Protection sorted on your vehicle so that it accepts the new unit. Ebay might provide you with the correct unit (and screen of course) if you know what you want. Be prepared to part with a considerable quantity of pennies.

Third way, buy a cheap unit from Ebay (or the one you're thinking about) making sure it's of the type which can be feature unlocked as not all of them can, then finding someone with the correct knowledge and tools to activate the features and continue as the second way.

It can be done, but simple it isn't. If you search for posts by SashaGrace on here, she's gone through something similar.
