Kerbed alloy

Featured Replies

As title, wife managed to kerb one of her alloys, only done 1500 miles :@

I'm guessing our car will be one of the first on here to suffer this misfortune....

Does anybody know if the Edition wheels are diamond cut or regular alloys?

They’re not diamond cut.

You can get them repaired.

Does anybody have any experience of alloy wheel protectors like RimBlades (other products are available)?

Sending commiserations I have to say that has been our experience on other cars with low profile tyres, I remember when husband scraped his on a previous car he was so mad at himself.  The first set of replacement tyres he changed to non low profile, he anticipates doing that with the Karoq assuming that will be ok.

You cannot just change the tyres to non low profile, the wheels will have to be changed too. This is the biggest negative with the Edition model, 19" wheels with low profile tyres on a family SUV - what is the point?

I disagree, nothing wrong with the 19's, can't complain one bit about the ride quality plus they look good. As for the kerbing, it involved a large old rough cast concrete kerb so even a higher profile tyre wouldn't have saved it.

Thinking back over the last twenty years we've been together we've only suffered two kerbing incidents, the last being in a Toyota Rav 4 with smaller wheels and higher profile tyres.

With the car we did it on before it was possible to use the same wheels, we'll have to see what the tyre company says when we are in that position, hopefully a long time yet :D

I scuffed my diamond cut alloys (Octavia vRS) on a pothole and as I'm just trading it in shortly I got the "cosmetic" fix (repair, polish and lacquer) which was done by a mobile unit for £65... and unless you inspected every inch with a magnifying glass, you'd never know!

The main issue is not the low profile (this can't be changed on the same wheel as it would change the circumference of the tyre and therefore would upset speedo, etc), but whether the tyre has rim protection.  This generally shows as a thicker element on the sidewall around the tyre near the edge of the rim. Some tyres have none at all, others have a lot.

Of course, some of the alloy wheels designs have a the wheel sticking out further, thus negating any rim protection that the tyre gives.

There is reasonable rim protection on the Bridgestone fitted to the 4x4 tdi.

I remember now that the problem with our wheels was that the centre stuck out more than the tyre B)

Probably the best tyre would be the CrossClimate SUV with a reinforced side wall which I think is designed to offer some protection to the rim.
