Manual Fart

Featured Replies

My manual 245 embarrassed me and itself today whilst I quickly changed from 1st to 2nd... It farted. Just like the repulsive DSGs.

It's never done it before and hopefully it won't do it again. Must have been a bad batch of Shell

Are you changing gear yourself? How quaint! ;-)

DSG / S-Tronic / PDK is the future of performance driving, at least until electric propulsion with 100% torque at 0 revs takes over.

Agree with the above. I'd happily swap you the exhaust off my 220 OP, which definitely does not fart even with DSG.

No doubt about their efficiency. They just need to lose that noise.

(although the new M5 I think, has a traditional torque converter)

But manual is the past, present AND future of FUN driving. While using performance will land the driver in jail, because all us motorist who enjoy cars are the spawn of satan in the minds of 'normal' people!

My Morris Minor used to fart constantly - its signature exhaust note

As my dear old Dad says 't'is a sad arse that can't rejoice!'

My 220 DSG breaks wind with silent aplomb.

Mines a manual not heard any flatulance, always in SPORT. On the subject of Shell V-Power checked a couple of fuel receipts and noticed on 05/04/2018 it was £129.9 per litre and last fill up on 20/05/2018 it was £138.9 per litre at my local garage. Get the feeling that the big fuel retailers are taking the mickey again!

I paid £1.459 for V Power last week :crying:

Saves us £1,350 to spend on better fuel, eg. SUPER UNLEADED!HA HA!:D

I've been using Shell (normal Diesel) in mine since I purchased it at the back end of last year.  In my ownership so far it has had nothing else in it.  I pass a couple of Shell garages daily and normally have a look at how much it is as it varys between the stations.  Last week it seemed to go up by almost 1p every day.

I did use 4 tanks of V power and whilst it made it ever so slightly more spirited to drive it made no difference to MPG - I couldn't justify nearly 10p per litre more for now increase in MPG so backed out to normal shell Diesel.

On the other hand in my old 2.5 V6 Vectra GSI running on V power eliminated a dull spot in the rpm so there are benefits to it :)

V Power Diesel just has more detergents in it, so you may as well just add some millers instead for 1ppl extra. Petrol actually give benefits if your car is mapped for 98/99 RON.

Totally agree with your summary ROBBIJAY.

My manual 245 has had zero flatulence in 9.5K miles.  Doing it from 1st to 2nd is just going to be embarrassing around town?

Particularly as 1st gear is good for 39MPH in the manual, don't know about the DSG. You're about to overtake me as mine done 9,781 miles since 17th August 2017. It's going to have a nice rest for the next 3 weeks as a foreign holiday is looming on the horizon. Note to all burglars reading this HOUSE ALARM will be set and no car keys left in the house so pick some other house to burgle, scum bags!B)

Thats almost what I'm doing except using a Redex treatment that's been on offer in a Asda recently :)

V Power diesel is not just regular diesel with some cleaning additives. V Power actually has a higher CEL rating than regular diesel, therefore its more calorific and it also has additives aiding combustion, hence you get more power or more economy (depending how you use it), a smoother engine and cleaner exhaust. A mapped old TDI 130 that smokes a little on hard acceleration (like I once had) does not on V Power. You could always just use Diesel Rhino additive to the same effect though for less.

Back on topic, I wonder if the gear change fart was caused by the throttle still being a bit open and the engine killing the ignition while charging gear allowing either a bit of unburnt fuel into the exhaust which then ignites and makes the noise or maybe it just retards the ignition a lot to avoid overspending the engine and the fuel burns very late in the cycle as the exhaust valves open.

I've never tried changing gear with an open throttle in my wife's VRS family wagon - I'll have to give it a try sometime and see!

What happens with the DSG to 'achieve' that noise? Because it sounded identical to a DSG fart, usually heard continuously when a chav is behind the wheel of an S3.

Didn't hit the rev limit, traction control didn't flash etc. Warm day and I had been on a spirited drive so hot engine / exhaust. My standard Focus ST (5cyl) used to pop and bang regularly but sounded good!

It was thinking about what happens with the DSG brought me to my suggestion above. My own car is a Leon Cupra 300 DSG and I can get the gear change fart in any of the engine modes, but only really noticeably under certain conditions. I have to have a fair bit of throttle and best changing over 3000rpm but not at the red line. It seems to get quieter at highest revs. Loudest is 4500 - 5500 on a WOT. I was thinking it maybe just cuts the ignition for a moment but keeps fuelling to keep the exhaust gasses flowing.

Is it not just the blow off valve/bypass valve on the turbo? - so that when on boost and the clutch is activated the valve opens to stop the turbo running away with itself and sending the engine revs rocketing with the decrease in load. Would happen in both DSG and manual gearbox under the correct circumstances

I don't think it can be this or it would happen when you take your foot off the throttle.

I’ve never seen them make claims about increased cetane rating in my 9 years driving a quick diesel?? They only ever state that the extra cleaners will help economy/power by the engine running properly. That’s why I stared using millers with cetane booster instead.
