I have to look the VAG number on the rear diff next time my car is up but I am convinced I have a gen 5 on mine.

This is a picture of a gen 5 Haldex opened:

That has surprised me, no planetary gears visible & the crown wheel looks too small to contain any, how does it cope with differential wheel speeds?

Hi from Sweden!

Just did my first haldex gen 5 service . The pump was changed 27000 km ago. And as you can see in the picture , the little filter is full of ****. So glad that i cleaned it, in with the new oil, pump the motor with vcds and fill it again. I managed to fill about 700 ml . The oil that came out was about 550 ml. I guess they didnt bother to fill again after priming the pump

Hi - I think the answer is clear on this, but I'm assuming there are no special tools for this - just (ideally) ramps, oil & likely a syringe to get the new oil in?

Any tips on where to go in VCDS to prime the pump would be appreciated!

(local dealer has lost my business as they serviced 2 months ago but did not bother with Haldex, asking me this week to go back...) local indy are good but will have limited experience of Haldex - can do VCDS myself if needed but need to know where to look 🙂)

TIA

thanks @BerkCo - I've got a new favourite YouTube presenter - he's great!

@AndyO2 There is a set of seals(actually 2x o-rings for the pump and 2x bolts) which are good to be changed every next pump cleaning.

Definitely not something I would change every time, but it’s good to the be changed every next time having in mind that the pump is removed and then refitted back.

Just my 2 cents :)

@fr1nklyn thanks -  I agreed with local mechanic to go for the seals & bolts - it was the second Haldex oil change so figured best to do so. Wanted to get the job done by local guys due to the suggestions that dealers in the UK don't check the filter. The garage asked me to come down & speak the mechanic - he wanted to show me the gunge he got off the filter, the dirty oil & the 'lumps' of oil that had come out - we both agreed that was not 'normal' for oil... Removing pump definitely worthwhile. Thanks all. For anyone picking up on this thread, it's worth watching the video - the work is easy, but the car has to be raised & having the correct kit to drain & refill will make a huge difference.

The joys of friction material suspended in the oil with no filter system so the only place it can really collect is on the gauze of the pump.

terrible setup really - or at least terrible service advice to not clean the filter from vag

And it's not only Skoda dealers, but all VW brands.. Not sure is the Haldex gen5 filter "not serviceable" for Volvo dealers as well?

Just had my skoda vrs 4x4 car serviced and I got a message my car needed a heldex oil change.i have never heard of this before.i had it done at a cost but why is it not been told to 4x4 car owners for

NO - take to an independent for the Haldex as VAG dealers will only change the oil and not take out the pump to clean it and the filter, arround £110ish at an indy to clean the pump and oil change.

I paid 140 pounds yesterday.to have my oil changed

It's part of the service schedule - Skoda/VW does tell people the intervals for engine stuff, DSG, VAQ and AWD systems. IIRC it's now down to 20,000 miles, along with the Halex-derived VAQ diff.

£140 is about right - do you know if they cleaned the pump gauze? It's like the oil filter on an engine, except it can't be changed - it has to be cleaned.

No got no idea, they only said to pick the car up around 90 minutes then I was supposed to pick carvup from service.

I'd think that for £140 at a main dealership, it is only the Haldex fluid that has been replaced. The bill should detail what materials have been used, for a basic oil change there should be a bottle of fluid + FILL and DRAIN plugs - so is, guessing from past prices paid - and increased them due to "time passed", £70 + £15, which leaves very little labour time.

Yes the car was in for service and I got a text that they could not find anything on there screen regarding haldex service.i agreed but I have no idea how they did it.the car service and haldex came to £401.00.

Christ I'm glad I do all my own work, Haldex was a bit of a fiddle with levelling on the drive but came out with a nice clean filter when I last did it.

It failed its MOT on a ball joint last month - 20 quid for a new one and it took longer to drive from the MOT Garage to the motor factors, home and back for the retest, than it took to swap out the ball joint.

Hate to think what the labour would be on that without the part.
