Squeaking/squealing coming from front wheel... brakes?

Featured Replies

Another problem to fix!

noticed today an awful squealing/squeaking from front drivers side wheel. I’m presuming breaks, although pretty sure it’s not a stone in there.

Ive had a quick look (through wheel trims), and it looks like the calliper is stuck on (I can see drivers side but not passengers.)

any quick/fail safe things I can try before I take it too the garage

Jack up the front of the car. (Put on axle stands)

Put in neutral, try spinning the wheel and there shouldn't be any resistance.

If either wheel is sticking or not spinning very freely, a sticking caliper is highly likely.

Not something that can be established by visual inspection only, the pads sit so close to the disc that there's never a visible gap.

Went out for a long drive last night and it went away! Will get the garage to check next time it’s in.

thanks

Mine is doing the same thing, has been doing it since i bought it. When i went to unit18 they cleaned up the brakes, but it's still doing it so not sure what it is yet :(

Mine was only serviced a few weeks ago and I’d be pretty sure that they looked at the breaks then

Well the phrase "looked at the brakes then" - that would need some clearing up, depends on the type of garage you used and the service they said they would carry out during that visit.

Looking at the brakes might only be a quick visual check for pad friction material remaining and surface of discs, a quick road test/roller test including the handbrake and maybe to round it off a quick look to see what the fluid level was.

Servicing the brakes properly, if due, could mean wheels off, callipers washed down, pads removed cleaned discs and pads checks for remaining service life greased up slightly and refitted, pistons checked for free movement and not seized, if drum brakes on rear - drums off and everything cleaned up etc, then check brake fluid for water content or just replace it if the car's service is known and its due to be changed.

So which version of brake looking at do you think has taken place recently?
