Kodiaq dsg knob swap

Featured Replies

Is it possible to instal kodiaq dsg knob into a superb 3? The original dsg knob in my sportline got damaged and i am thinking of swaping it for kodiaq one as it looks better (or at least more interesting in my opinion). Has anybody tried this and does somebody know is the kodiaq shifter itself shorter than the one originaly fitted to superb?

I plan on doing this on mine as the shape of the knob on the Superb is a cacophony, the Kodiaq one looks MUCH better, very "Audi style".

However my understanding of Russian is zero and Translate doesn't do a great job.

Maybe a stupid question but in your link, why does he need to take off the leather cover/boot since the new knob comes with its own boot?

At a guess, the trim at the base of leather cover/boot is a different size/shape.

Once you have the old one off, you can compare for any obvious differences and then make a decision if you need to transfer the leather cover/boot :)

You mean not every part is made to fit a Superb??? Outrageous... :D

However I was just told from my dealership the "566 713 123 E EXY    DSG 4x4   Black KODIAK"  knob costs 230EUR and i may have to re-think about it, but then again my birthday is next month.... :blush

by design i would prefer Audi style

with perforated leather cover

who will test compatibility to our Škoda Superb III :)

p.s.
enjoy the moment, next Škodas won't have gear stick at all :crying:

Useful links however I prefer as OEM as possible so the knob from the Kodiaq with the same letter logo and identical text as the Superb suits me fine.

I browsed a used parts website one hour ago and there were 3 such knobs from Kodiaqs in very good condition (essentially like new, at least from the pictures), cost: 100EUR so I ordered one and will be looking into fitting it in the coming weeks :)

I will update with the results :whew:

Ok the Kodiaq knob is here, however the "side switches" so to speak seem to have moved/shifted towards the right side and they seem locked in place there. I haven't had that type of DSG knob before so I don't know if both sides are meant to be pushed in when switching through the PRND positions and whether they should stay at the same distance (symmetrically) from the middle of the stick when in normal position.

Here's what I mean, left side:

Right side:

It's visible the switch is pushed towards the right side and it won't move at it is, I wonder whether the guy that took it off messed up with it or if that's how it's supposed to be when removed, also because I read the guy in the Drive2 website had some issues when pressing the switch before installing which I am not very clear on what he meant and how fixed it in  the end (says his friend did it but he didn't understand how...)

And since that was a used part the return policy is rather strict which means I don't want to attempt an installation on something not in the right condition to begin with as that could end up voiding my return right.

Ideas?

I haven't opinion with Kodiak knob,

but i have question about our,

what is the function of knob?

without press break pedal can't move gear leaver anyway :(

in previous Sonata i were able move between N and D without press pedal

I have a Kodiaq and it’s the right hand side that pushes in on my right hand drive vehicle (ie operated by the thumb), the left is static.

I wonder if it’s the interlock stopping you pushing it in or perhaps it is already in and springs out when connected?

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Makes sense, and I would expect on a left hand drive vehicle as mine that it's the thumb of the right hand that pushes the switch and the opposite "switch" to be static.

Maybe it locks like that when it's removed and becomes operable again when it's installed on the gear lever? Looking closer at the pictures from the link above it seems as it might be the case as the in the first picture when it's off I think I see the right side of it sticking out while once in place it seems both sides are protruding equally, but the left one should be the actual switch (Russian car so left hand drive)

I think I'll go ahead in the coming days and report back!

Ok so I went out just to get a "feel" for the installation. Removed the DSG boot and realized there's a metal clamp that keeps the knob assembly fixed on the gear stick. This need to be cut off apparently but nothing is mentioned about its replacement... Even if one gets the same VAG item clamp i believe it needs a particular type of pliers to be installed which I don't think I have.  I wonder if a strong zip tie could be used instead although I don't like to improvize on this stuff too much. There is no mention of it at all in the installation post as far as I could tell

Also, I had a look at the service manual for removing/installing the DSG handle and i believe I am in the situation described where the knob button has been already pushed in (and that's why I wrote it felt fixed and fully depressed a couple of posts above).

According to the manual that could end up destroying stuff if attempted to be installed like that so a special tool is needed to push the button back out which *guess what* i also don't have, although I could come up with something. I believe the guy in the installation post resolved this via lots of patience and some fishing line? Sounds like that's what he refers to.

Oh and the red plastic shaft shown in the installation being inside the knob assembly is not included in my replacement knob so i guess i need to transplant it from my current knob, before I fix the button out

It doesn't seem a trivial installation at all to be honest...

PS. I forgot the part where I still haven't figured the process of how to to remove the boots from the knobs with the 2 knives and 4 hands he describes...

I think an intercooler install might be simpler than this :tongueout:

Hey @newbie69, I'd just like to point out that the guy who made the video did most of the work with one hand while filming with the other.:D

Seriously, however, I admire your courage to throw yourself into feats like this. If you succeed, the result will be even more rewarding!

Unfortunately this is a stock-for-stock  replacement meaning he does not have to transplant the boot from one assembly to the other which apparently is the hardest part of fitting a Kodiaq knob and is where I also got stuck...

Yeah because as I wrote above he removes and re-installs a new unit as a whole, not transferring any items from one to the other :tongueout:

I haven;t managed to remove the boot from the stick with the 4hands 3 knives method in the original link but I did manage to damage the new knob (the external casing) when I pushed a screwdriver too hard against it from the inside :@

So currently I have left it in a drawer and will have another final go in a few days time with a friend who likes to waste time on such stuff . If we don't succeed, I'll smash it with a hammer, at least that way I'll get some satisfaction, seriously one of the most frustrating little stupid things I;ve ever attempted, I'd take a 6hr suspension removal any day over this!
