They are never going to be in front of you for long unless you are stuck in traffic because they always go for any gap up the road and then will be right up your jacksy and you can not see the front grill. 

 

They are an Ultimate Drivers car, an ultimate pillock considering UK speed limits. 

Maybe the design team got really smashed one night and said " I dare you to...." and somebody took them up on the dare.

Personally I'd love it to be a flop to force them to change their design language to something more coherent and classy...   But it will probably sell well to the usual BMW 'look at me' brigade...

If the car is a stellar thing to drive and the price was right, it should find a home with the car enthusiasts. But the main problem is, I just specced one up and for about another £5k (in the real world) you could get yourself an M3 or possibly an M4) with similar spec, more room, a good deal more power and a lot more torques. It's not a cheap thing, but I expect the overall performance to be good. It may well be the purists choice over the RS3 or A45 CLA, but its price is putting it within striking distance of not only the M4 but also the Cayman GTS and even the F Type 450 (RIP soon 😞 )

Soo this is a bit of a first world problem...

 

 

I was at a petrol station recently and as I exited the car, a notification popped up asking if I wanted to instal new software. This happens quite often on the car and is normally a background operation that doesn't interior with normal operations. So I figured why not, clicked "yes" and started to refill the tank. A few minutes later I jumped back in the car and pressed 'start'

 

 

 

Nothing!

 

 

Tried several times and nothing! Had I bricked the car? Looking at the centre display it said "23%" and I figured I'd just stop the update and move the car to the jet wash where it could carry on installing the mystery software. Nope! That doesn't work, can't cancel the update. What!!!??? After a couple more minutes of fiddling around I returned to the cashier with my head hung low and declared "the car at pump number 5 will be there for the next 20 minutes or so and won't start until it's finished its software update". I got a look of 'well it's a BMW isn't it!' and a few people rolled their eyes at me. I laughed, partly out of embarrassment and partly at the absurdity of the situation. Around 20 minutes later (I'd guessed about right) the car fired up as usual and I was back to normal....or least mostly back to normal, as many of the settings I had installed had been reset to default. 

 

Too clever for its own good - not quite the '... in perfect harmony' prior generations might've aspired to!

I suppose it was partly my own fault. It asked me if the cars to be locked and put in park mode, which I've never seen before. I now realise it was telling me it was a 'park it up at home and do this', sort of message. It was also around 600mb, so there was quite a bit of stuff integrated into the car. At the same time, my phone's remote operation has been upgraded to match the car's new software and so far seems to be very slick. First time that's happened to me and that with around 10 years of BMW ownership and all those cars being capable of over the air updates.

 

I'm wondering if it's part of the catch-up caused by the chip shortage. It took a few months to get 'Android Auto/Apple car play', after I bought the car and this was because of the chips BMW sourced not having the software/licence for the phone features, at least they didn't at the time of installation. It all woks seamlessly now too, except that update happened in the background as normal.

The amazing thing about that extremely expensive and heavy car is it's only a few second slower around the dreaded Nürburgring than the saloon car it's based on! Not that much over 7 1/2 minutes. 

Well, the reviews for the M3 'Estate' are in and seem positive. Although £100K is a lot of money. How did we end up with a 3 series sporting saloon that weighs in around 2 tonnes (inc driver), £100k price tag that can hit 62 in around 3.5 seconds? I've put a link to Autocars brief test and I'm sure there are many others that you can all find for yourself, so please Keith DON'T simply fill this thread with links to Car, Autocar, Evo etc etc etc etc (although why I bother to ask I don't know, you never take any notice, but if you did actually start posting words of your own, I might take you off my Ignore list). There are also quite a few pictures of the rather green beastie in the article.

It's quite some time since I updated this thread, so here goes. 

 

  I've gotten used to the M3 and it is, as Steve Sutcliffe says, "a weapon". Astonishing performance from a paltry 3 litres and a rather podgy kerbweight. On a rolling start, alongside my beloved M4 (F82 model), in the dry and on a smooth road, in relatively warm weather.....I doubt the M3 (G80) would be much quicker, but everywhere else, in every other condition, the M3 is quicker...much quicker. It's simply nuts quick, owing to its traction and ability to hide its rather lardy weight.

  Cornering grip is great, turn in is superb, body control is nigh-on absolute and the brakes are actually pretty good. Build quality is almost faultless, with high quality materials everywhere. The ability to surprise 'performance' model Teslas is great fun (they believe a quick 0-60 makes their cars sports cars....not to mention the 0-60 figures quoted are with a 1 foot roll out). It also delivers moderately good mpg, considering its weight and performance and has plenty of room inside and in the boot. Even the looks, something I quite liked by the time I owned one and has grown over time, are praised by more people than any other car I have owned or driven (? Surprised me, given the initial, almost universal hatred of the design). And yet...

   I miss my old M4. The M4 was a car that tried to kill you basically. Wet weather was a tippy toe exercise, mid-corner bumps were interesting and you had to think before you flexed your toes. Cross-country and on a rough road it wasn't a fast car, it was a lairy, heart stopping, fun car. I loved it. 

 

  It has surprised me, if I'm honest. The general motoring press has gone nuts for the new model, something they didn't always do with the previous version (all except Chris Harris who loved the previous incarnation more than the current one). Don't get me wrong, the M3 is a brilliant car and a wonderful thing to own, I realise I'm very, very lucky, but still....  It's odd really, I recognise the car is better in almost every way and by quite some margin, but to enjoy it properly on public roads, you need to be travelling as escape velocity speeds. The only things I can quantifyably point as dislikes, are the steering wheel (too fat) and the low speed ride (seriously jiggly, even on the softest setting). All the systems work, as does the remote phone app stuff, the interior is a triumph (there are still buttons and knobs) and as a tool to drive quickly in, it's almost peerless in its class.....and yet....

 

I keep looking at F types Jags, the P450 in particular. A car that is much slower, less well built, doesn't handle as well, has much crappier software and infotainment system stuff. It's thirstier and will cost more to run. It does have enormous character though, that dinosnore V8, the cruder suspension (at least in its handling), some weird design decisions.....and yet....those looks and that sound. 

 

So, go figure. My old M4 (F82) I would rate as a 8/10 car and the M3 a 9.5/10 car and yet I miss the inferior model  perhaps it is my age, or the fact that cars are probably becoming too fast to enjoy properly on the public roads (although overtaking is still a hoot). I've always thought that true beauty has to have flaws to reach that elevated status and I think that I'm coming to the same conclusion with cars. A perfect car isn't necessarily the car you want, it's just the car you think you want. 

 

Disclaimer: I do still love my M3, I'm just trying to put into perspective that it is so accomplished, some of the character that can make a car special is lacking imho. In wet weather I do not necessarily agree with that view of course I think only Mustang drivers know the true nervousness of the M3/4 (F80 series models) in damp conditions

It's not an Aston Martin, I would love a V8 model of almost any description, or a V12, or pretty much anything with an AM badge

A couple of months ago my car was cased at 4 oclock in the morning, by a young scummer on a bike, riding up to my car and calling someone to discuss it. It scared me quite a bit if I'm honest, so I took a couple of extra security options and hoped that was enough. Anyhoo a couple of weeks ago while I was at a pretty low point, another young sod on a bike did exactly the same. Face covered, of course and you can't make out the bike properly. It made me think I might bail out of the M3  no car is worth someone breaking into your house and putting a knife to your throat and ask for the keys plus any additional security measures that need to be defeated. I've also just lost my mother and it made me think, life is for the living and there's no second lap of the track, so even though I have had to find some money to complete the deal (PCP) and it's not something I can easily afford, I thought, just do it!

 

 

So..... I started to look at something less nickable and noticed that the bubble on certain types of cars had just burst. My M3 lost £3.5k in its book value in the last week!! So after much browsing, visiting, emailing and phoning around I got an amazing offer on one of the last unregistered V8 F Types left in the county (very good part ex value too, which surprised me and the dealer  ). It has the dreaded white interior, which is a nightmare if I use the car for work, as I wear black jeans and sometimes I jump in the car to get out of the rain. You can imagine what happens with a soaked pair of black jeans on white seats. But it was a compromise worth taking for that engine and those looks.

 

So, the deal has been done and the M3 is going next week (hopefully to a dealer, not a burglar). The Jaaaag certainly won't compete with the M3 in terms of performance, as the Beemer is an astonishing cross-country weapon if the road is reasonably wide. The tech on the F Type is at least one division lower than the M3, possibly two, the sound system isn't as good (well the one in the doors isn't, not the one under the bonnet of course), build quality isn't as good and the engineering doesn't seem anywhere near as classy. I lose 2 doors and half a boot volume, as well as economy goes a bit South. Also, my insurance goes down by 33%, so hopefully I am right and people don't nick Jags as much? 

 

But... those looks and that engine  

I can understand your thoughts re scum bags etc but I'm not sure I would have chopped the M for the F tbh despite the desire to own a V8. 

That said, I don't live where you do and car crime here, at least where I am in the here I am is almost unheard of. I don't even worry about locking my car once it's under the car port and I don't worry about going to bed leaving the front door unlocked either.

I doubt there's a better looking V8 Jag around though so I hope you're very happy with it. Maybe some seat covers are in order as I doubt I could stop wearing black jeans ever. 

I loved the M3, but loved the older M4 more. Now that was a very lairy car and had the reputation of being a bit of a widow/widower maker. The M3 Xdrive is a massively accomplished car and the cornering grip, traction and 'turn in' were on a different level to any other car I've owned, as well as having an incredibly strong, bulletproof engine. It's also built like a tank. Perhaps it's so good that I feel it lacks a tiny bit of character? It was certainly the best car I've ever owned, but sometimes you just want a really big portion of cottage pie... I can't afford a new V8 from any other manufacture apart from, perhaps, Ford, but the OPF filters have muted and muffled their V8 even more than it has the Jag 😞 Anyhoo I only had a Porsche and/or a V8 on my bucket list before I retire in a few years time, so it had to be done, good or bad, while I still had some earning power.

Yeah...   Sorry...   I'd just done a 3 hr drive with my 83 year old deaf MIL so needed to wind down a bit...   And looking at pictures of F-types to confirm seemed an ideal way to do that.
