Engine mounts / Dogone / Engine movement / Clonk sound

Featured Replies

Well the Polo was handed in for further investigation into the clunking, its "year 3" service and its first MOT, both the service and MOT being carried out maybe just under a month early to get all these tasks completed at one visit.

I got a phone call at 16:20 to say that they have found the source of the clunking, it is an engine mounting, now I'm thinking, maybe incorrectly, that it will be the gearbox mounting that was removed and greased at the last visit, maybe not, time will tell as the part will not arrive at the dealership until Friday, so I've just left the car with them until it has had the new engine mounting fitted, if it really is the engine mounting, I'll probably change the gearbox mounting for the "AS" version my self after the warranty has expired!

  • If you bought the car from new and it only has 2000km on it I suspect it is less than 6 months old and you can reject the car (in writing) as being of "unsatisfactory quality" and "unfit-for-purpose".

Well I've got the wife's Polo back and they have replaced the "AR" version of the gearbox top mounting with the "AS" version, first impressions are that this mounting is firmer and it does transmit some gearbox noise back into the passenger cabin that was not there before, so I'd reckon as VW only seem to use "AR" or "AS" versions of the 6Q0 part, I'll be quite happy to live with the stiffer "AS" version with its extra gearbox noises. Skoda seem to use a 6C0 version with these 1.2TSI 16V engines though I don't know where all of these versions "sit" in order of stiffness, it might be helpful to know this so that people who have clunking could fit a slightly stiffer version without ending up with no clunking but gearbox noises. Anyway, I don't plan to keep on trying to get a perfect solution from VW as it is very heavy on my available free time.

Hello

I am owner of Skoda Fabia MK3 10 TSI ( style ).

My Fabia went back to the garage when it had 2000km. I issued a complaint about knock sound when shifting ( letting the clutch and changing gear from 1. to 2nd and 3rd ). A metalic sound that did not sound healty.

They reported back they changed the clutch, release bearing. They told me the reverse gear was loud and it could be the transmiiton too.

After the "repair" the noise is still there ( something to do with the 1.0 3 cylinder engines across all manufactures ), VW, SEAT... Just a shame VW could afford this kind of heavy metal clonk sounds from the engine. It is said that it is a characteristic of and engine. If this is the case VW should fire all engineers and send them to an ear specialist since a NEW car should now make sounds like that. If Renault , Citroen 1.0 engines do not make sound like that, why should "german" cars. Hope these VW, Skoda, Seat 1.0 cars get recalled for this serious issue. People seems to just ignore this kind of things.

Now back to the part with the engine mounts. After the clutch replacement I noticed a certain shaking with the engine ( when starting the engine, when shifting, when lightly adding gas to the throttle). There is a certain knock underneath the engine and carpet in the engine. I have tried a 2nd Fabia when starting engine and driving and it feels with no vibration. Also the gear change is far better.

They have replaced the transmission mount and the upper mount. Now they have said it must be the dogone mount since my Fabia drives worse / different than the one they have at the dealer).

I drove a Rapid 1.0 TSI that has the same engine. It drives smooth. No vibrations, no jerkiness when adding gas / accelerrating.

I can confirm that my 2 month old Fabia 1.0 TSI (bought 28th May 2018) with 4000km makes the same sounds and is also jerky during downshifting.

As we speak the car is at the dealership garage (in Nicosia, Cyprus) for a check-up.

The car makes clunking sounds, particularly when the transmission is warm, during stationary gear changes (P to R, D) and is also jerky during downshifts coming to a stop (sound is more evident 2nd to 1st) accompanied by a clunking noise. The jerkiness is most noticeable over speed bumps (in Cyprus they are large) as if the hill decent control kicks in and the car's mechatronic module gets confused as to what gear to select between 1st and 2nd.

A 2012 Citigo rental car that the garage provided me with drives much smoother compared to the Fabia.

Will post an update on this as soon as I receive an answer by the dealership.

First engine mount I changed at 10.000 km, and that new changed start to "clonk" after 2-3000 km. Then I bought Lemforder engine mount and it was good for 60.000 km, and then replace it again. Thought that Lemforder is better than OEM.

Hi,

can you attacthed a link for the correct engine mount for mk3 that you used ?

i started experince the clonk also at 44km, i moved recently to a city with very rough roads.

29978 01 is part number of Lemforder engine mount for Skoda Fabia III 1.2 TSI 110 PS.

I seem to remember thinking that Lemforder is a supplier to VW Group as the VW Group part numbers get grinded off these item, also there is a cross referencing to the VW Group p/n on that site I think.

That number covers both the 6Q0 199 555 AR versions and the 6Q0 199 555 AS versions of the VW Group part, the AR version was originally used on petrol engines and the AS version was originally used on TDI engines.

My wife's August 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS originally had the AR version but after be reworked to get rid of the clunking, VW fitted the AS version which I'm guessing is a harder rubber compound.

Edit:- to me this is strange as I'm guessing that Lemforder is an original supplier to VW Group factories, but for that supply contact, it was supplying 2 different versions of this mounting which are identical physically so probably only different in the hardness of the rubber used, and now in the aftermarket they are supplying one part number which is okay for replacing either mounting!  There is a third mounting out there with a VW Group part number that is 6C0 199 555 B, but so far, Lemforder is not offering a suitable replacement for that, plus I don't know were this third version fits in in stiffness relative to the other two versions.

**UPDATE**

It turned out that there were a few screws in the front of the vehicle below which were loose, after reinforcement. The number of times the noise has been heard has decreased but still exists. The MOUNTS was checked by the mechanic and found to be intact.

Okay, but can you check to see which version of gearbox mounting is currently fitted to your car - if the last letters are AR then ask them to talk to Skoda and consider fitting an AS version of that mounting.

I can see this without lifting the car?

Yes you can from looking down at it from the top under the bonnet, but you will probably need to loosen off the battery box fixing bolt as it covers the top of the steel frame of the mounting where the p/n is stamped on.

I will add this since all my 3 engine mounts have been raplaced.

I read a lot of reviews it stops the wheel hop and the engine rocking. Still the clonk remains. Got to do with something hitting the firewall or some other bushes are loose.

Did you fitted this Bushs?
i cant find ones that fited mk3.
